  • Any drafters/autocad out there?

So my brother in law told me to hand in a resume to his engineering firm, hes a partner.

He said they're looking for a young drafter to stick with the company for the long haul. I literally have no experience in drafting or any education. Although I have worked in construction and read blueprints on the daily, I feel like I may be underqualified.

He says it's all on the computer, and they're willing to train someone with no experience or education..

I'm wondering how big of a learning curve will this be (if I even get it) for a 25 year old. I dont want to show up the first week and them be like "wtf you know nothing about autocad?"

Plus I've never worked in an office. It's for a civil engineering firm.

Not looking for negative comments. I'm honestly just a grateful kid that's willing to learn, and if I can give an opportunity down the road, I will..

    Thanks

  • Will I get a bigger mortgage if employer pays for monthly truck loan?

So I work in construction in canada.

My employer has agreed to pay for my loan of 500$/month. As I use my truck for 100% work.

We have in writing stating he will pay for loan monthly in full due to work purposes.

Now that my monthly loan is paid for 100%. BUT I still hold the title of my loan (about 20,000$)

Will I get a bigger mortgage loan since my truck is essentially paid off even though I still have the loan title in my name?

    Thanks

  • Subscription canceled but they still billed me?

I emailed this company because I wanted to cancel a subscription. I could not find anywhere on their site to cancel subscription, I looked through their entire website, and read thoroughly. So I sent them an email a week prior to my next billing cycle.

Then I wake up this morning that I've been billed the full amount.

Since I sent them an email, should they honor my request and refund me? I'm not a dummy, I seriously couldnt find it, I would think emailing is still a valid way to get a hold of them since "customer support" is what they're proud of.

    Or am i SOL?

  • Would you rather job A or b?

Job A) carpenter/labourer/apprentice.. pay 25$/hour. Lots of out of town work (in rentals or hotels) sometimes at home. Usually mon to fri. But sometimes 2 weeks on and few days off. Either flat out busy for a couple months. Or super slow, averaging 20-30 hours a week. Lots of room to the top. Lots to learn. But work is fairly inconsistent. Never know where you'll be next. Demanding work. No benefits.

Job B) maitenance/labour for the city (city worker). Odd jobs, painting, cleaning, some carpentry, some landscaping. General duties to keep a city running. Pay is 24$/hour. Full benefits, some room to move up, pay is capped out around 37$/hour but that's years of seniority. Monday to friday. Work is guaranteed 8 hours a day or more if required. Always at same location, around city limits.

I'm in job A now. And it's getting old. The boss really likes me, but I havnt moved up in 3 years, even though I'm a really solid worker (truth). I got offered job B and im sleeping on it.

Job A im scrambled. Picking up tools on site 1, then hauling lumber to site 2. Building on site 1 one day, then travel 4 hours to site 2. Get 1 day off. Then next month I'm laid off for a week, then next week I'm breaking my back. But I keep seeing me be the top guy in a few years.. idk, would you take the steady job over the hustle and bustle?

It's like I'm always trying to impress someone when they have some hidden agenda. And it's been 3 years no promotion...

    Thoughts?

  • How does owning own business at tax time work?

So my dad sat down with me and said I should look at starting my own business (sole proprietorship). I've been a carpenter for a guy for 2 days a week and then I do cash side jobs like home repairs, siding, decks, fencing etc, foundations.

He goes on and on about how I can write off fuel, meals, housing, hotels, etc etc.. He says to keep my receipts and claim them at tax time if I start up my own business..

What does that even mean, like when Im using TurboTax do I manual enter in my 3000 receipts for the year? And they give money back? How do I enter in my Canada pension contributions? There are so many questions..

Biggest reason I want to be my own boss is because I do good work and I want to develop my name and take time off when I want. And I'm tired of putting into employment insurance, and when my boss lays me off he doesn't want me to put in a claim.

Yes I am uneducated but there's seriously no guidance for this stuff. Help!

    Thanks

  • Still cant gain weight at 3500 calories per day?

I'm 146 pounds. Did 3500 calories a day or more for 7 days straight. Stepped on scale and exact same weight.

I tracked my calories exactly, scanned all the food, weighed.

I suppose I have a demanding job, I'm a carpenter and work 10 hours a day.. but I'm eating every couple hours, using mass gainer shakes etc.

But 3500 cals is twice the amount I normally eat.. just not understanding, does my metabolism need to adjust still for awhile longer??

    Thanks

  • Working out of town, 3 guys in a trailer or should I tent it?

So were working 3 hours out of town. The job is monday to Friday. For 2 months. Hotels are crazy at this time of year (300+ per night).

My boss offered to let us borrow his ok sized trailer (medium sized, I'd sleep on hide a bed). Then 2 other guys will get bed and table bed.. for 2 months.

Weather is phenomenal at this time of year and will be all summer. So I thought about tenting it on my own, I have a huge 4 person tent, I can build a platform under it. Theres showers at the campsite, ocean front views, 2 min walk to jobsite...

What would you do or how would you set it up?

  • Is it time for me to start my own business?

So I've been a carpenter since I was 16, I'm now 24. I can handle pretty much anything that's thrown at me, I'm diligent and I know what looks good and what doesnt, I know the building codes, I know the business side of commercial construction. I've built houses , finished concrete. And done a lot of digging.

For the passed 2 years I've barely moved up, no raises, and I'm not challenging myself.

I'm constantly offered to do jobs for friends and family, and random people for good money but have to turn them down.

I have a business license and am looking at insurance. I'm sick and tired of my shift changing from home every night to out of town for months. We run a skeleton crew and I'm alone on most jobs.

What are some of the next steps I should take? I'll get insurance then business cards? Do I alert my boss or try and go part time?

  • Should I buy a skid steer and rent it out?

So a guy from work has 3 skid steers that he rents out full time and he told me he makes 10k a month off them if hes aggressive and has them running all the time. He pays his buddy 100 bucks cash to deliver and pick them up from sites so he doesnt need a trailer for transport.

He typically doesnt rent them out if they arent at least 3 day jobs.

Used ones with 600 hours are like 40,000 dollars. I could put 15k down and get a loan for the rest. My dad has a trailer that I can haul it with for some cash. And sometimes we need a skidsteer for jobs so I could rent it out to dads business (I work for him).

Rental places are gold mines, I have buddies that are heavy duty mechanics that can work on it.

    Is this a decent idea?

  • Is this enough food for me to grow?

Morning- 2 cups milk, a banana and slice of bread with peanut butter

10 am- salami, cheese and pickle sandwich, cup milk

    1pm- another sandwich- cup milk

3- protein bar, cup milk, maybe banana if I'm feeling it

5 PM mixed veggie, either chicken breast, Turkey or like 3 eggs

    7 gym time

8- more milk, maybe some crackers to tie me over

I'm doing a heavy lifting program (just started) mixed with either a quick swim or sauna.

I'm aiming for 2 litres of milk per day. Thoughts? I know my diet isnt the greatest but i like what I eat and feel good.

  • Living in a sailboat, thoughts?

I'm 23, I want to be free and go where I want when I want. And living in a home just doesn't suit me. My other idea was to live in a travel trailer but I realized I love to fish and dive too much to spend my life on the road.

Has anyone ever lived on any sort of vessel for an extended period? Was it worth it? Did you go anywhere cool? Is it sustainable and cost efficient compared to land living?

    Thanks!

  • Sister is pregnant. Do you think she will lose weight?

So my sister drinks quit a fair amount, and she just checked like she does every month and theyve been trying for 2 years.

She has 3-6 drinks every day, and over 6 every weekend. Of mostly beer. She eats pretty bad, pizza every week, garlic bread most meals, processed foods, little to no fruit. She cooks wholesome hearty meals etc.. needless to say a fatty diet

So im thinking without the beers since she is pregnant, and a better diet for the baby she might actually drop some? Shes over weight by 30 or more pounds

  • How to properly ask this girl out?

So i met this cute girl from my brothers girlfriend whom she works with. Were both 23. We met at a patio with friends and everyone hinting that we might be a good match, semi seriously but also jokingly.. we flirted and she laughed

So i slept on it, told brothers girlfriend to pass on my number. Ball is in her court. So she messages me and we have some lame conversation but obviously pretty friendly.

Weve been texting a bit back and forth but i am horrible at it. I know where she works (with brothers gf).. and thought about just grabbing some groceries and ask her out that way for either a sit down date or a double date with brother and gf.

Thoughts? Is showing up to her work putting unnecessary pressure on her?

I want to show my confidence and that im actually interested and a chill dude. Texting seems cliche and not thoughtful..

    Thanks
