  • Preserving food in jars??????

I have decided to start making hampers with jams, chutneys, dried fruits and tomatoes/mushrooms etc. Does anyone know how you can make sure these things dont go off in the jars? I was thinking getting the jars with the seal tight lids would be good but what about regular jars? If you buy them from a shop do they seal when you put the lid on or do you need to seal themanother way so they dont g ooff too quickly?

  • Advice on house training a dog?

I have a male collie/terrier cross dog and I am having a very very bad time house training him. When he was a younger pup (he is now 1 year old) i lived half with my mom and half with my bf really so he was constantly from house to house. Now though i live in my own home and we have done for several months. Yet he will not go in the garden to do his business. He will bite me if i try to urge himto go into the yard and will jump up at the door scratching and barking to get in. I also think he is suffering from seperation anxiety because anytime me or my partner leave (even if one of us is still in the room) he willget really anxious and run around and bark at us and if we try and keep him in the house whilst one of us leaves he bites.

Themost frustrating thing is when we visit other people like my mom or my bf's mom he will go in their garden and do his business quite happily. I have tried watching him like a hawk and then as soon as he starts to do his business in the house i tell him no and put him in the yard, then when he does it outside i tell him he is good. This hasnt made the slightest bit of difference. When we are out on walks he will happily go outside too.

Does anyone have any advice what so ever that i can try or has anyone had any experience in this area? I have never ever had a dog that wasnt house trained by now and its beginning to become very stressful.

  • Can someone give me health/weight advice?

    Hi

I have struggled with my weight my entire life. Even when i was slim, a size 10UK i still weighed 10 stone. So i thought i was fat and of course got bullied. Since then i have put on a lot of weight and feel much worse about it. I went through periods of really starving myself when i was younger because i was so depressed about my weight.

Recently i have started using a calorie counter app on my phone. It tells u what calories and fat u eat per day etc. I have been trying to cut down more on the fat as calories are easier to burn off. I know a lot about whats healthy and whats not but i know that when it comes to somethings i will convince myself something is ok when its not.

Realistically is between 900-1100 calories a day enough? It doesnt sound like a lot but on a typical day i will eat:

Breakfast-2 slices of gluten free toast

Dinner-half a boxof grapes, a cuppa soup and 4 gluten free crackers

Tea- a small handful of plain quorn pieces, a handful of cooked mushrooms and a portion of stir fried vegetables cookedin water.

Snacks-the other half of the grapes, another cuppa soup and 4more crackers and a box of cherry tomatoes.

I do feel hungry but i figured this was because im used to much biger portions. I tend to eat okay foods, just toomuch of it in one day! Has anyone else got experiences they can share and any tips.

  • Why did my bird die, he was less than 1 year old?

It was less than a year old. He was a budgie. He started making a funny noise on the bottom of the cage then had some sort of fit and died? Has anyone had this happen to their budgies or does anyone know what it could have been?

  • I have a water infection?

Basically i'd never had any water infections until January 2010. I was working a lot of hours and put it down to being exhasuted. I had antibiotics and it went away. Then 2 weeks ago I got another water infection. Again im really run down and tired due to working long hours. So i was given antiobiotics. This time they didnt work. That was 2 weeks ago and today my symptoms are quite severe again. They were just light for the last 2 weeks but i knew i wasnt quite right. I visited a doc today who told me there was blood, protein and increased amount of white blood cells in my uring (compared to 2 weeks ago). He has given me a week course of anti biotics and said he would like to get my urine tested in a lab. Could anyone give me any helpful advice on why he is getting it tested in a lab when he tested it hmself. Also, could it be something more serious with the blood, white cells and protein?

Also an important thing is over the last 3 years I have had several urine samples looked at and twice now doctors have told me i have white blood cells in my urine.

  • I had my nipple pierced a week ago?

Sometimes if i move the bar it bleeds a little still. Is this normal after a week? Ive had virtually no pain since getting it pierced and it seem clean enough most of the time other than when it bleeds. I wash it twice a day.

  • Blackout after swallowing food?

I know someone who blacked out after they swallowed a large amount of food at once. They get dizzy if they swallow a large amount of food. Recently he actually blacked out and woke up with a few bumps on his head. He feels like the food is pressing on his wind pipe or something but surely blacking out isnt normal as it only happens for a few seconds.

  • Whats up with my budgie?

She has gone from being quite calm to mental and biting everything. Also she wouldnt come near me of her own accord until the last day or so and now she flies at me and lands on my clothes pecking at me. She pecks everything from her cage to her toys. ???

  • What does m budgies behaviour imply?

I found a budgie in my mums front garden about 4 months ago. When i took her in to take care of her (budgies wouldnt survive outdoors where i live) she started of quite quiet and didnt make a sound. After a couple of weeksshe was fine, singing away and flying around the house (as i had a cage but neerlock her up). Recently she has become more aggressive and today she is flying round the furnature more than usual. She is landing on the sofa and pecking it, on the sweeping brush handle, almost on the floor-flying very low. If she wants attention its odd because she gets aggressive when i go near her. Also she has been bathing inher waterbowl a lot today-something she doesnt normally do.

Could a more knowledgable budgie owner explain her behaviour?
