I have a littermaid that I have been using for years. My cat is in all day. Out for about 9 hours at night.
So far other than having to download an ebook on how to clean the sensors, I have had no problems.
You must use good scoopable litter. I use Cat's Pride Scoopable. I check the box every week, scrape the bottom to break up anything that has gotten clumped to the bottom. And listen to it when it is raking the litter. If I hear it pause I check on it. My Littermaid is inside a box in my office, so if Salem goes to the restroom, I get to hear the Littermaid working.
If he goes back in, it stops if it "bumps" into him. And it won't hit him. He likes it, I like the ease. I have 3 places with Littermaids listed below for you.

We bought a large Litter Maid and we have had excellent luck with it. It has a timer on it where you can control the time the box is active, plus a air cleaner. The only fault that we can find with it is that it is a bit noisy when it operates in the wee hours of the morning, and if you use only the batteries, you'll find that they don't last very long. Use house current. The best and cheapest potty litter is BJS. You get 40 pounds for $7.99 and it clumps like a charm. We had a smaller model for several years and it worked excedingly well. We highly recommend one.

Sorry, but clean it yourself. They are expensive, and can be alot of hassle. I work at Petco, and I see how many people return them because they don't work right or the cat is terrified by it... save yourself some money and buy the Booda Clean Step litter box. Keeps litter in the box and little children out of the litter.

I have had the littermaid litter box for almost a year now and I LOVE IT!!! Cats don't mind it...they have a tendency to run up and investigate it when it starts running though. I use tidy cats small spaces cat litter with it and it does wonderfully. I also have a friend that rescues kitties that just invested in 2 litter robots and she says that she loves them...of course now I want one...kinda pricey but heres the website to the litter robot: http://www.litter-robot.com/default.aspx?ac=1?sour...
