Will I be able to work out like I used to?
I messed up my knee, I'm assuming through powercleans a few years back. Since, I have been afraid to lift like I used to. I am perfectly able to run like I always have been, but I want to strengthen my legs back to where they were. When I try to strain it, it becomes very sore for long periods of time. Is there any way to enhance the strength in my knee so I can go back to highly weighted squats and cleans?

Well, without a physical exam we're all shooting in the dark...even any physician who would answer you here.
Without any more information (surgery? tissue damage? diagnosed ligament or supporting tissue tear?) I would assume the best way is the slow way...slowly work on strengthening the knee and related area with UNWEIGHTED activity - lunges, bicycle distance, etc.
Only after you feel you have mobility, range of motion and strength for, say, three vigorous sets of unweighted lunges, then start adding very light weight to the equation.
I think you'll start to expand your limits over time. No way to intelligently answer if your limits will reach your old thresholds - in other words, if you'll be able to clean what you used to.
Only time will tell.

Go light and increase gradually. Main;y try and strengthen the tendons around that knee first though. Do leg extensions, and when you do get back to squats, do em at least 2x a week. Make sure you're cleared from you doc before you really start.

I've had an acl ligiment implanted in my knee. I would never change anything with my exercise or work out routines without consulting the surgeon. They would be able to tell you what impact it would have. If it's sore you may be aggrivating the injury. I am gonna go under the assumption that my knees are toast and I'm not going to "bounce" or strain them again.
just my opinion.. but check with the person who worked on it.

I have severe tendonitis in both knees and believe it or not try stretching you ligaments in the knee. Kneel on the floor then sit on your heels and lean back as far as comfortable, the more you do it the more it will help and the farther back you can lean. that was the only way I could play lacrosse. :)

Try Shark Cartlage tablets and Reigndeer Antler tablets. They really do work. my mom takes the reigndeer antler tabs and her knees are a lot better. Same for my Step-dad and he had like 6 sergeries on his leg after a race car accident.

Go see a physiotherapist. They may be able to introduce you to some exericises that will help to gradually get back to the place you were.

Check it out with a doctor who specializes in sports medicine. Do you really expect to get an answer on Yahoo that you can believe in?

if you do resume the same old workout won't you end up with a damaged knee again? Why not try something different?

with age it's hard to get back after an injury.why do you want to max out again?maybe it's time to be satisfied with less especially as squats are concerned.
