Too upset to sleep? Goebbels Children...?

Tonight I watched "Downfall" (Der Untergung). You don't really need to know about the movie, but it showed a very well known occurance:

Magda Goebbels had her children take morphine before bed. While they were knocked out she killed them with cianide. This all took place in the Fuhrerbunker in Berlin; Madga and her husband, Joseph, saw "no other way" to avoid Russian capture - which they feared would be far worse than death.

As Russian artillery approached Berlin, and Hitler and his new wife Eva committed suicide, Madga set to work to kill her 6 children then she and her husband walked outside where he shot her, then himself.

All judgements, analysis and arguments aside, I am upset. I did some reasearch on the family and just feel sad about all the tragedy during that time. I don't have anyone to talk to right now and wanted to "put this out there, " hoping it would help me to feel better. Don't know why, but this is just sticking with me right now...thanks for reading

There are a bunch of those kind of things that stick in my head - usually when I'm having a hard time getting to sleep. I guess I just have too good an imagination. Whenever I hear about anything really horrible happening to kids, I feel like running out and fixing something. Since I can't, it keeps me awake. Hope you get to sleep soon.

That was a terrible decision that those parents made in a terrible time. And there but for the Grace of God go you and I.

You are like me - very prone to being emotional about such things. That is why I do not watch movies like that. And when I have been in Washington DC for the past few summers, I stick to the memorial monuments and art galleries. You will not find me in the Holocaust Museum? Why? Because as a world history major I have already studied and been appaled by that time in history. Seeing the names, body parts, etc, is not going to help me know how horribly wrong the holocaust was. By the same token, I grew up Catholic, with nuns giving me in detail what happened to Christ as he was crucified. I did not need to see Mel Gibson's movie about the crucifixion to know this. Life today is one catastrophe after another as far as the media is concerned. It's only news if its unusual. For instance, has your local newscaster ever said, "Today in (fill in your local city) no one was murdered or killed. Most days in history, nothing much happens accept people just living their lives quietly.

There are no good answers for you. You SHOULD be upset. I think that is the point. I know that there is a scene in Titanic that was upsetting to me when the mom is reading to her little ones in bed and you know what is coming.

Anytime children are involved it is so hard. I dont know if you are a Mom.....I cannot imagine being in her place and feeling that 'putting your children to sleep' would be better for them than torture at the hands of Nazis......

It is hard to imagine that such horrible things could happen in our world. It makes me so sad to think about the poor people in Isreal and Lebanon tonight......

I have no answers for you, only that what your feeling and experiencing is normal.

Perhaps you should take some time and think about the courageous people that often are a part of these things. I recently read a book by Lois Lowery about a Danish family that smuggled people out during the war. Amazing courage. http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~bvparks/Number_the_St...

I am a wwii historian and I know how it went. they were nazis and a bit crazy. The russians really hated the germans if you think that she did a bad thing, which she did, research the german and the russians during that period. There is no reason to lose sleep over it. It was a sad time in the world during that time period. You have to understand that these folks really believed that Hitler would take care of them and that they would prevail and takeover the world. they were insane, and it is very disturbing, but there were a lot of disturbing times The jews in the concentration camps had it probably the worst, but try not to think about it if it disturbs you.

i know how you feel...there are so many movies i have seen that upset me, especially true ones like you said, and the ones shown on lifetime for women.

it is so hard not to feel sadness when you watch something like that...but you have to try and remind yourself to move onto something more positive.

    i hope you feel better.
