If you need to identify a police officer in person, they should have a badge with an ID number on the badge. The badge will be inscribed with a department name, and not generic.They are required (in my area) to have a picture ID from their department available. Without both of those readily available, you might not have a real officer. Be cautious, as you are on a slippery slope in demanding anything with some cops. A real officer won't have a problem showing you his ID, as long as the circumstances allow it. If he is in the process of an arrest etc..., you need to wait. With a badge # and a name, you can identify an officer with any department. For obvious safety reasons, you won't get much more info than that.

Definately ask for a Badge number and which agency they are from. If still in doubt, you can legally go to any Police station and ask if that person is real or not. In some areas, the officer must be in uniform to approach you. Also, in some areas, the officer that comes up to you in a marked car, must be in uniform. But when in doubt, go to the nearest officer and ask. Women should especially.

Real cops have real police cars and real badges and real ID cards. Detectives still have real badges and real ID cards. They will have real hand cuffs and will really take you to a real jail if your actions warrant that. They almost always have real business cards (the cop may be out temporarily) and if you ask, they will be able to really tell you who their boss is.
