Dependents?? How many can I claim?
I'd like to know how many dependents I can claim. I already claim one (my son). I am the head of the household right now. My husband is ill and is with his family in Mexico. He is a legal resident of the US and has a valid SS#. Am I allowed to claim him? Would it be in my best interest to claim him? (Meaning at the end of the year that they are going to give me considerably less money back on my refund?) Can I claim myself as a dependent? I am considered low income but, I don't receive any type of welfare or govt programs.. Thank you to whoever can give me some advice..
I forgot to mention that I am supporting my husband. I send him money every 2 weeks.

Well, if you file a married joint return, you can't file HOH. So, you'll have to look at the differences and see what it would be if you filed each way. I assume your husband has no income, or you'd definately need to file jointly or you could do married and file separately, but the IRS doesn't like people doing that, so the tax amount is the same for both statuses. Sorry, it's hard to explain. You always claim yourself on a return. Email me if you need more help or my assumptions are wrong. Also, don't forget Earned Income Credit and other credits for kids. Those are directly applied to the amount of tax you owe, often resulting in a big refund (The EIC)

You can claim yourself and your husband as dependents. Generally what will happen is they will take less taxes out of your weekly pay but at the end of the year, when you file your taxes, you won't get as much of a return as you may be used to getting. In some cases, you could end up OWING taxes, but it doesn't sound like this will be the case for you.
You can claim anyone whom you are financially supporting: children, spouses, self, parents or other family members who are sick or disabled or who otherwise depend on you for financial support.

This is a question best directed at a tax accountant or tax lawyer. Don't trust anybody else's opinion with this.
