Did anyone else think Christianity was a joke as a child?

My parents were raised Catholic but I never had any religious instruction. When I got to school (age 4), and I heard all these grown ups talking here and there about heaven, hell, angels, I seriously thought they were joking well into my teens!

I thought it was like Santa Claus, you know, a big cultural myth, and we all just agree on perpetuating it. The more I heard, the more ridiculous it seemed. Who wants to be resurrected? Isn't it selfish to only want to act according to the bible to receive something (eternal life) as recompense?

Kind of scary actually......I don't mean to offend believers, I'd rather hear from atheists or agnostics. Thanks.

Well, since your main "question" didn't state that you wanted to hear only from people who can't accept a reality that is greater "than the nose on their face(s)", and I'm already here, and since your parents and I were all raised Catholic, I suspect you owe me the time to answer your "question". I didn't begin thinking that Christianity was a "joke" until I was in my twenties, after I had all of my college degrees, and felt like I knew it all. And I became a horrendous anti-Christian, and everyone knew it. I didn't pull any punches, then or now. And then, a few years later, God pulled one on me, and I found that the "joke" was me, and was on me. My wife left me, she took my two lovely kids, ages one and two, and left me penniless. Think that's coincidence? Wrong!! My life is a perfect, and I do mean PERFECT, example of truth and consequences, and I can easily go back and look at my life and see that the times when I was "ungodly", I may have had fun for a while, and I do mean FUN, but then there literally was "hell to pay". So, you can take it as a joke, but, out of my need to be kind to you and other "non-believers" or "athiests" or whatever you like to be called, let me tell you, one day you too will discover that the joke's on YOU, and you won't be laughing when you read the punchline. This isn't an attempt to be alarming, or whatever. It's just a requirement that I be honest with you, and when you read the punchline one day, you might remember I said this, but you won't remember who I am or how to get in touch with me, but you'll sure wish like hell you could. God Bless you.

You'd rather hear from Agnostics and Atheists because you are ignorant. You may call me ignorant for being a Christian..SO WHAT! It's a shame you don't believe in God....If you celebrate Christmas you are a loser for celebrating a religion you do not believe in...( Christmas has a religous background for all of you atheist who feel the need to celebrate it anyway) "

Errr.. Starlytefairy - You are seriously misguided if you think christmas is about christianity and jesus! It was stolen from the pagan festival or Winter Solstice which is 21st december. They changed the day to try to make it their own.

Also, many people celebrate christmas because it has become a family tradition, not because it is religious.

As a young child I was blissfully free of religiousity but then a neighbor started a "Good News Bible Study" and bribed us with candy to memorize bible verses. She also told us that people who took the Lord's name in vain would be struck by lightning and sent to hell. Whenever my parent's argued and someone said the GD phrase I would become hysterical with fear and cry. thankfully I was yanked out of that "study."

Then later, proselytized into a Baptist church, I learned that Catholics worshipped a dead Christ in a coffin and my visiting Catholic cousins were appalled at my ignorance.

I guess I was just unaware of the joke.

After a fundie preacher said women in shorts were bringing economic ruin and armageddon to the US I had enuf!

I was raised in a super strict Catholic home and I remember thinking it was a joke growing up. Not a funny joke either but a scary one. My parents Catholicism gave me nightmares until I was 15.

A nun beat me because I didn't belive the pope was divine. At 13 I realized it was a scam and a way to control people.

I believe in humanity and myself. I do feel its my duty to enlighten people about the scam religion is. Religion is holding back stem cell research as we speak. It gives people false hope.

Never. Even though I didn't believe whole heartily as a child, I still had a feeling in my heart that He was real. I then felt His power and presence as an adult and knew He was real. I believe in Him with all of my heart and all of my mind.
