How many words should be in a vocabulary of a 20 months old?

visit baby centre.com i love that site they have alot of good tips keeping in mind there really isn't a set limit all kids are different but as mothers we tend to get nervous if they are not reciting Shakespeare by the age of two...lol don't sweat it

We just had our 15 month visit and the doctor said she should be saying 2-5 words. I would imagine for a 20 month old it would be around the same range. I wouldn't base anything on the "average" each child is different and learns at a different pace. You also have to factor in things like is there an older sibling the child can mimic? How often are you speaking regular english (not the cute baby talk we all love), and things of that nature. I'm always told my children are developing at a nice pace...THEIR PACE. Hope this helps.

My daughter is 24 months. (a little older) She says about 75 words/phrases. I think that sometimes, our children are speaking and we just don't understand. Listen carefully, if she makes a certain sound everytime she sees a book, or a cup, whatever. She may be saying a word and you dont even know it. Then encourage the sound.

Every child is different, but don't be afraid if she isn't speaking a lot. Just 6 months ago my daughter only said about 15 words. Each month your child should add 1-2 words to her current vocab according to my doc. after 18 months.

My son is 20 months old and only says mama dad that I know and occasionally cat and dog should I be concerned? I'm working very hard with him with letters and reading to him it just seems like he has no interest in talking. But he understands if you ask him or tell him to do something. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

There isn't really a set amount. Children are all different and mostly set their own milestones. You shouldn't worry. As long as your child turns its head when you talk to them and acts like it can hear. If the child gets to 4 and doesn't talk then you should start to worry.

not very many maybe 10 if that many depends on how smart they are and how much their parents talk the more they hear the same word over and over the more they learn to say them

my daughters pediatrician told me it should between 10-15 and its better to have two words together...like uh oh or hello dada

Ours didn't have that many. Unfortunately, two of them were NO and WHY.
