Question about riding with kids in taxis...?

I am hoping to get into NYC soon with my almost 2 year old daughter to visit a friend of mine. I will most likely need to take a cab once i get there as its a very long walk from the trainstation and i don't trust the subways. I was wondering about the laws regarding children riding in a taxi cab. Is it law to have to use a car seat like it would be in a regular car? The cab drivers can be erratic at times and i am very against traveling without a car seat, however in all the times i've been to the city i never saw anyone lugging around a car seat.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I live in upstate NY and I am almost positive the child still has to be in a car seat and yes you will have to carry it around. I have a 4 month old and right after she was born there was a court error and they suspended my DL so when my husband was at work if I needed to go somewhere I had to take a cab. carrying around a seat for a 2 year old isnt as bad as lugging an infant seat and the base that goes with it. Call the cab company and make sure but to be honest its not just the driver of my car I worry about driving erratically you never know about the other cars on the road!

Holy crap, just take the subway like everyone else. I've visted down there tons of times with kids of all ages, even babies in strollers. Its endlessly easier and cheaper to just take a subway.

People walk to different places in the city, its all part of living and visiting one.

You'd be a million times more stressed having to haul a car seat around with you from stop to stop. You could also rent a car if you're that anal about the subway. It'd probably cost you the same as all the taci fare you'll incure, and its easier with a car seat.

But honestly, taking the subway is the easiest simplist plan. In all the years ive been to big cities ive always taken the subway and never had a problem. Although philly i might advise you to take a cab... but NYC has some of the best subways around.

Don't know specifically about NYC; but in my travels, it's been pretty much a given that you have to have a car seat for children that age. You may just have to bite the bullet and lug your own around -- most cabbies won't go to the hassle of providing one for you. If you can call ahead to get a taxi, they MAY be able to dispatch one for you that will have a car seat; but don't hold your breath. You might also consider investing in one of those car seats that converts to a stroller.

Also...don't let the stuff you see in movies and on TV about the subway system dissuade you -- New York's got the biggest rail system in America for a reason, and tens of thousands of people use it every single day without getting robbed, stabbed, shot, or killed in a derailing. We've got the second largest system here in Washington DC, and I've been taking my son on the Metro since he was 3 (when we moved here).

I'm not sure. You could call ahead and try to arrange for a taxi and seat to be waiting at the station. May cost a little more but better safe than sorry. Look into renting a seat while you're there in case you make any other trips. Good luck

I beleive that you can get a small traval carseat that would be easy to carry...it's always a good idea to have the baby in the carseat...check out the web for travel carseats.
