Why is me getting fit a bad thing?

All my life I was really skinny naturally - no matter what I ate. I was constantly having to defend myself because of my weight. I became so self conscious that I never did any form of exercise at all - not even PE at school - the result now being that I find it hard to run to the end of the block. Over the past 5 years, I have gradually put on about 10 kilo's - bringing me up to 55kgs.

I am not really that concerned about my weight - more about my abysmal fitness levels. As such I have recently joined a gym - prompting ridicule from my so called friends. I believe they just feel bad about their own body, so they cant understand why me (who they see as much smaller than them) needs to join a gym. Cant they be happier for me because I am trying to better myself (once again - not through my weight, but through my fitness levels - therefore making me healthier overall).

What do others think?

It good you care about your fitness level. Your friends should be more supportive. I go to a gym also.

  • I was the same way when I was in elementary, middle and high school, and have also put on weight over the years. I work at a Curves for Women, and was wearing one of my work shirts while grocery shopping and the cashier thought I was totally crazy for belonging to a gym because I don't look like I need it. (I guess I hide it well *wink wink*.) Joining a gym to keep yourself healthy is smart! It will help you set good habits- habits which will keep you from gaining that average 2 kilos/yr, promote muscle gain, and keep your heart strong! GOOD FOR YOU!

Well, I'm definitely happy to finally see someone who cares about how they look and feel! Good for you! Ditch your lazy and apathetic friends and come be friends with me. ;) You don't need friends who are so jealous that they don't even care about you.
