To other endometriosis sufferers taking Depo Provera...?

How long have you been taking Depo Provera to help with endo symptoms? Has it remained helpful or did it "poop out" after a period of time? Has it ceased your menses? Has it helped with pain control? Are you concerned with osteoporosis, cancer, weight gain, age, weird side-effects, hair growth?

Personally, I have been taking depo for 5 years now and it's been a god-send for ceasing my excruciating periods. I just found out that I have mild osteopenia (mild bone loss) due to it. My blood pressure has been a bit wonky and now I need a pill for that. I haven't had any significant weight gain (phew!) but my sex drive went into the dumps. I get more hairs on my chin now and pluck the nasty guitar strings out regularly. I know it could be far worse than it is now. I do count my blessings that I found SOMETHING that helped. It's changed my life - certainly for the better as I can now live relatively pain-free.

I'm interested to hear others' experiences with this med.

I haven't taken depo provera, but I was taking a shot that was very similar to this for six months. I had surgery to remove the adhesions and then immediately went on this shot to suppress the endometriosis. I got HORRIBLE migraines, &hot flashes since the shot I was on put me into a menopausal state (Im only 28). I was, and still am, worried about osteoporosis seeing as it runs in my family and I also smoke. BUt it did take away my periods and I was greatful for that!! I can honestly say my periods have been easier to deal with and alot less painful since I did take that shot. Also, I had absolutely NO sex drive while on the shot.

When the six months on the shot were up, I had another surgery so the doc could recauterize all the previous adhesions and when he went in, he found more. So needless to say, it helped, but it wasnt long term. I am currently trying to get pregnant so its out of the question for me, But thank you for letting me know how it was for you....maybe after I have a baby I will try this shot.

    Depo For Endometriosis

I would get off the Depo shot. I think its too much of the horomones all at once. I had the worst side effects ever. I experienced horrible hot flashes, weight gain, and a lack of sex drive. After i stopped taking the shot it took almost 9 months for my period to return and hasnt been regular since. (it was regular before i started taking it and ive been off it for 3 years now).

The only thing i was looking for out of it was an easy, period free way for birth control. Instead it turned out to be a very moody, hot flash, never been regular sence way. I wish i had never taken the shot. Also, i never had a heavy long cycle before, but now i do.

Im just starting to get myself straight from being on depo. I have discoverd that the original pill method is the best way to go.

i have also known others to have bad problems with the shot as well. Anything that increases your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, makes ya gain weight and grow hair isnt the best option. All birth control has side effects. But i definatly believe that a once daily pill is the best option. The shot last three months, thats alot of horomones at once. Would you take 3 months of the pills in one day? (no). Its just too much for your system. It might be working for you now, but consider the side effects and the after effects as well. Your bones and your blood pressure is important to keep healthy. Why would you take something that you gotta take another pill to correct what the shot is doing to ya?. Glad it is helping with your other symptoms though. Id talk to your doctor about just a basic pill and try some advil or alleve for the pain.
