Can you tell me about school psychology vs. social psychology?

I'm very indecisive. I've been looking into Master's and pH.d programs for School Psychology and Social Psychology. I'm really interested in them both. Is anyone out there currently going to school for or graduated with a degree in either? Do I need a teaching certificate for school psychology?

Any websites would be great to check out too, I've checked out a few already, but they're not very clear.

Thanks!

They are pretty different fields of psychology. In terms of theory, school psychology is aptly named since it deals with the psychological issues students face in school from kindergarten all the way up to university situations.

Social psychology is very different and more broad because it focuses on all the psychological dynamics of social interactions between people and groups of people. The basic foundation of social psychological theory is p*e=b or person times environment = behavior.

In terms of employment, the best financial decision would probably be school psychology since you will likely get paid more as a practicing psychologist at a grade/high school or university. You can also work as a school psychologist at a HS with only a masters degree. School psychologists are practicing therapists so you need to get certification. This sometimes makes admission to school psychology programs more difficult.

Social psychology is almost entirely a completely academic field. There aren't too many social psychologists working in the private sector but there are some in corporations/advertising firms, etc. Get a Ph.D. in social psychology and you will almost certainly be teaching at a college and doing research. Many school psychologists also teach in colleges.

If you are majoring in psychology at your school (or even if your not) look up the psych professors on your school website and it will likely tell which each professor is. Email them and ask them to give you a brief run through of what distinguishes the different disciplines. Also, if you are interested in a better financial situation, I/O (Industrial/Organizational) psychologists get paid very well to evaluate work place efficiency. And you really only need a master's degree to be making about 55,000+ right out of graduate school.

    Good Luck!!!
