What makes wrong wrong?

It is usually wrong to kill another human because our life is made precious by respecting other's lives and that other person has value and a place in society. Theft is wrong because another has worked and acquired an item and it may be of special value or importance to them. Both basically because we wouldn't want them done to us. Adultery is wrong because it violates a trust from a loved one and can bring disease and illegitimate children into a home. There is a real reason that wrong is wrong. Why are each of the commandments wrong? Why is homosexualtiy wrong? "God said so" is a cop out. If it is wrong, it is wrong for another reason too. I would like to hear why?

Update:

Fireball226, that is the God said so cop out.

It's not wrong. I know God "says" it's wrong in the Bible, but God in the Bible also says that it's OK to own and beat slaves. (You can beat them as long as you don't kill them.) So if somebody says that homosexuality is wrong because God said so in the Bible, then it would stand to reason that they believe everything the Bible says, and therefore they also believe that it's OK to own and beat slaves. Hey...you either believe what the Bible says or you don't. You can't pick and choose...

Wrongs can be different between cultures and can change over time.

Some cultures believe that certain food must be prepared in a certain way and it is wrong to do otherwise. That wrong my have evolved before refrigeration was available and so may no longer be applicable. Even so, there will be some who follow the tradition just because it worked for prior generations.

For people who believed in the necessity for racial purity some people it was wrong to have integrated schools, shared restaurants and bathrooms. For people who believed in male superiority, it used to be wrong for women to expect equal pay.

For populations that were dying because of disease or loss of life in war and natural disaster, one can imagine that homosexuality was discouraged because it diverted sexual energy from reproduction.

I suspect that if you check the 10 Commandments you will find that each was described to discourage actions that tended to have bad results for those societies at that time and probably still does. In many cases, just as you have described and to the developed world of the 21st century, these bad results appear quite logical.

In Biblical times, only a few understood the logic or had the wisdom. Moses was very wise indeed and knew that the long suffering Tribes would never have believed he could personally have such wisdom but if he described these as the words of God, well . . . . . .

Why is "because God said so" a cop out? About why homosexuality is wrong: 1. God said so 2. In case you don't believe in God, because homosexuality doesn't contribute new people to perpetuate the species. 3. There is not a more promiscuous, unstable, std infected sub-culture any where. However, people who will not accept "because God said so" for a reason usually will not accept other more tangible reasons for things either so I'm not going to hold my breath for ten points on this one.

The reason people use "God says" is because he does. The very first commandment EVER was "be fruitful and multiply" if two men reside together, they can't possibly do that. And the same with women. Adam and eve were a man and a woman FOR A REASON. They have the perfect contrast. Male animals only ever produced young with a females.

Not if we're an accident. No if we're serendipity.

If things are RANDOM, nothing matters.

There IS no MEANING to anything.

    MEANING comes with RELIGION.

You exist, big deal, so do I and I am more important than YOU, I have needs. I have needs to live, have sexual relief, have comfort, I come first you don't fit into the equation at all

NAME ONE REASON why I should include an ACCIDENTAL person into the equation and make them more important than I

Why should I BOW and PRAY TO YOU

    Why should I REVER you

    Why should I be penetant

    Give me a reason

We are MADE ACCIDNETIALLY BY A GOOF OF THE UNIVERSE, WE DOn'T MEAN AT THING, WE HAVE NO PATERNATY, WE COME FROM MONKEYS we should just monkey around

    What's all this MORALIST bolloeny!

What are you, some kind of a beleive in something higher!

What, I'm supposed to think something else matters more

    WHO DO I ANSWER TO

    ME not YOU

    THERE IS NO GOD

I answer to NO ONE but ME

    Live with it.

Do you have a Bible? Romans 1 answers your question. As a personal explanation I think it has to do with a choice that departs from the design of the Creator and what the Creator intended by creating man as male and female in His image.

The atheist or secularist will tell you that wrong is what is socially unacceptable, but as you know, the problem with that is that it puts men in authority of what is right and wrong. Why is this a problem? It renders morality a matter of opinion. If a murderer wants to kill, there is nothing stopping him from ignoring your opinion.

However, it makes much more sense in light of the Bible. God created us in His image, so we are given a sense of right and wrong as He has this sense. However, we broke this world. Our sense of morality has become tarnished, but we still hold a sense of morality. In order to find the true form of what our morality used to be, what perfect morality is, we must turn to our Creator God.

"God said so" isn't a cop out, it is a valid argument that bases itself on the biblical model of history. It tells us where our system of morality came from and why it is right to turn to God in these terms.

Indeed, as Romans 2:14-15 says, "(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)" In other words, God created us to be moral beings, despite the damage we have brought to our sense of morality.

EDIT: Using this concept, why is homosexuality wrong?

It is wrong because it is an abomination of sexual intercourse, an act God blessed to be between man and a woman. Sex is the joining of two into one flesh (although this is technically what marriage is), as Genesis 2:24 states, and this can quite physically be seen in the manner of how sex works (I'm not going to get into the details, I leave that to your imagination). However, we refuse to acknowledge that it is an abomination of sex, and we even go as far as to call it a perfectly natural thing.

At the core of my argument is the point: why trust man over God? Man is tossed back and fro by the waves of philosophy, but God is immutable, and He is our Creator as well as Judge.

Wrong is wrong when it harms another sentient being.

As for your question re any non-scriptural basis why homosexuality is wrong - good luck! I've asked this question a number of times and have yet to get any kind of answer that's not based on generalising personal taste into a "law of nature".

Wrong is almost always defined by culture. Adultery is not considered "wrong" in some societies, and neither is homosexuality.
