I want to train my cat..?

I want my cat to play fetch with her favourite toy, how can i get her to do so? I throw the toy and she goes bounding after it, plays with it for a while then comes bounding back to me. How can i train her to come back with it?

I think that cats have their own preferences about the games that they enjoy most. My current female cat loves to play fetch, but it was she who initiated the game by keep bringing a cable tie for me to throw. This is the only toy that she will play fetch with. My previous female cat would also play fetch, but only with scrunched up paper.

See what toy your cat prefers, and try throwing it a short distance to see if she will chase it. If she's interested in playing fetch she will come straight back to you with the toy, rather than stopping to play with it. If she doesn't bring the toy back to you, try again a few more times and then take a break as cats can get bored quickly. I've never needed to offer treats to encourage mine to bring back the toy, but you might like to try this idea if you think it would help. Positive reinforcement works best with cats, so when she gets it right, give her lots of praise, and make a fuss of her.

Bear in mind that all cats are individuals and she might not be interested in this particular game, as there may be others that she prefers. Our boy cat isn't the least bit interested in playing fetch, as he prefers a small toy that he can throw into the air and then pounce on.

Any game that closely resembles hunting techniques such as chasing, jumping and pouncing are usually the ones that cats enjoy the most.

Take it away from her, and lure her over to you by wiggling the toy. Then throw it again. Repeat it several times, and if she wants to play, she may bring you the toy to get you to throw it again.
