For me it is The Innocents. Black and white, 1961, UK.
Beautiful and terrifying, with no need for blood, guts or... exorcisms ;)
It is the quintessential English ghost story. I love it.
Best scene? So many... the face in the window, when the birds stop singing... or the woman by the lake... so chilling. Why? Because you get sucked into a madness and also, I think, because the most gripping and absolute fear comes from silence, glimpses and shadows rather than loud, close-up atrocities.

My scariest movie was the Ring. It was the stupidest movie I have ever seen, but the "video" parts where Samira got out of the well scared me. I watched this in midnight, and my bedroom was directly above a well I used to have. My room looked like the computer room in the movie with the same computer that Samira got out of. My mirror had red marker marks or something since a few weeks ago I babysat and some kid put the mark there. Those things really creeped me out. I was also scared of other movies like The Sixth Sense because of the throw up scene, etc, but when I saw it again it was soooo lame. That was true for most scary movies I see again. I never watched the Ring again, which makes me scared for some reason.

the exorcist -
The scariest scene is when the letters H E L P form on the girls stomach. It's creepy.
This movie is about a girl whos body is taken over by the devil.
rosemary's baby -
The scariest scene is when rosemary is moved into the room with the devil and the naked neighbors come and say weird things and have the devil curse her baby.

You know what? A lot of scary movies have a lot of sex and nudity which totally take away from the movie. I like movies that freak you out. I remember being really wigged out by The Ring, when she came out of the TV. I thought it was a good movie, better than the japanese version. The Exorcist was also freaky. Most recently, Saw and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I thought were really good. I love scary movies!

I tend to prefer the old films. Well... the shower scene in "Psycho" is a classic, and even though it doesn't show much gore I found it scary as hell. For the next few weeks after I saw it, I was afraid to have a bath if I was alone at home!

Pinocchio gave me nightmares when I saw it at about age 8. Especially the part where the boys are brought to the place where they think they can have all the fun they want, and then start turning into donkeys. It's hard to think of anything scarier to a kid than finding out that you can't trust grownups at all.
