Using ICE CREAM Trucks to entice children to Jesus?

I just witnessed this moments ago. I was driving home from grocery shopping and saw some gentlemen in a revamped ice cream truck preaching at kids in our neighborhood. As I drove by, I heard one of them (using a microphone) saying to about 30 kids, "Ok kids, say these words after me... dear Lord Jesus, I am a sinner..."

The age range of the children there was 3-7.

So, what say you ? Do you think this kind of proselytizing is appropriate to children of this age? I'm interested to see your responses.

Update:

I should clarify.. there is NO ice cream available.. just "the gospel"

Update 2:

for those who find this outrageous, disgusting, et al.. might want to star this question so people will see it. I'll leave it open as long as possible.

Update 3:

ct, I realize I'm just an icon on a screen, but I'm not given to making things like this up- my imagination just isn't that good.

Update 4:

Ok folks, I'm sending this one to voting. Too many good answers here for me to choose. Thanks to all who responded.

Wow, a new sort of indoctrination.

    I'd call the police.

If I was a parent, I'd drive the guy out of my neighborhood.

First off, hit's difficult to know all the facts by just seeing this. I live in a city where old ice-cream trucks and U-Haul trucks and other trucks are painted over and used for other purposes. So, if this was why the man was using a revamped ice-cream tuck then that gives this question a different "vibe".

If he was purposefully using it because he was hoping to attract children then I have an issue with it. It's deceptive.

As someone already pointed out preaching to children about any spiritual path without permission from the parents is also, in my book, a "bad" thing to do. The parents (or family) are the individuals responsible for the moral upbringing of their children.

I wouldn't go as far as to say this is a reason for hating Christians or any other spiritual path. I would however question the motives.

That is sick, and should be illegal. I am a Christian (LDS) but that is just WRONG! Children that age are the responsibility of their parents, and no-one has a right to mess with their minds in that way.

Also, children that age are NOT sinners, since they are mostly incapable of knowing the different between right and wrong. They don't realise how their actions affect other people. All they know is that Mum is mad if you spill the milk, bash your sister or brother or scream the house down. And Mum smiles and hugs you when you clean something up, tell her you love her or bring her a beautiful picture that you've drawn.

That trick with the ice-cream truck is just SOOOOOOOO wrong! What a sacreligious way to use the name of the Lord.

Hi Kallan. For folks who don't know I'm a fundie Xian. I think this scenario as you have described it is completely inappropriate. The parents should be alerted immediately.

Until a child is old enough (high school) to make and listen to a rational and logical argument then their parents have complete and total control over the child's religion. I would never actively try to convert other people's children in this way. If asked I will always share my faith, but I certainly wouldn't dress up a fake ice cream truck and try to lure children in. It's this kind of evangelizing that gives all Christians a bad name in the eyes of non-believers.

Oh my God, that's awful, the kids think they are approaching an ice cream truck, and then they get preached at instead? Oh, no, I'm with the other posters that said you should call the cops if you see this, not to mention tell the children's parents about it, at the very least these are "strangers" enticing children over by making them think they can get ice cream, and who knows what else these people have in mind besides preaching at these kids? Until the child is 18, his religious upbringing is up to his parents to decide, not strangers, those people are out of line....If the children's parents are there, that is another matter, but I doubt you would be so concerned if you saw parents with them....

Kallan, I don't know what to say; I have a feeling that this man doesn't see what he is doing in the same light as those who have responded.

    That's the problem.

Because only one truth is allowed in this story, his actions may be seen by some in the Christian community as commendable.

As a parent, I'd call the police if someone was messing with my childs head. NO ice cream and he's scoping the neighborhood? That should go under neighborhood watch!

We all know that religion doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with integrity.

OMG!! It will be okay, until one person ends up being a predator. I don't want people talking to my children without my being present!! The least they could do is provide ice cream!! What a cheat. I would get the license plate #. Then I would get in touch with the local authorities and just let them know. It seems a little suspicious to me.

No, I do not think that that is right at all. First of all, decieving kids to think that they are going to get ice cream and then tricking them to get them to say the sinners prayer. You cannot force anyone to accept Jesus, you have to make the decision on your own. If that guy had any kind of clue, he would know that.

Edit: I agree with the poster that said something about the parents being around. If the parents were there then that is a different story. But, we always must be wary of strangers talking to our children, whether they are talking about God or not.

I just want to say I find this hard to believe. But if it's true, and these children were this young, were their parents around allowing them to be preached to? If the parents don't mind, why should you? I would rather a child heard about Our Lord than some of the junk they hear everyday on the radio and tv. I'd rather they say I'm a sinner than "ho" or b****. If there were no parents around, I would have called the cops. Personally, I wouldn't allow my children near these men. It sounds like a ploy by child predators.

***EDIT: I meant no offense about not believing this. First because I don't like to think of people preying on children and second because there are people who lie on here and we all know that.

    God Bless.

Even though I am a Christian, I think that is wrong! You don't just go up to random little kids and ask them to say "dear Lord Jesus, I am a sinner." Honestly, theirs got to be some kind of law he's breaking.

I have never sen that but I have seen other things like it.

It is not appropriate. They have tryed to get into the public school system. I have seen teachers with bibles on their desks and one even where a t-shirt with the gospel on it. Lets have the Koran, the Wicca and so on if we are going htat way why not have everyone get in on it.

I threatened to charge one man for pursuing my older son to convert him and reminded him my son was a minor. He backed off after trying to get around me for a while. He should have been arrested in my opinion. It is not like something in a passing conversation. These are adults doing this deliberatly behind parents backs. In that same year my sons was pesued intensly by two Mormon missionaries as well. It also happened that this sporty thing was allowed into his school called Extreme Sports and was inviting kids to their exhibition. well I gave my son permission to go thinking it was sanctioned by his school and when he went it was an evangelical gathering seeking conversions! OMGosh! I was furious, called school pricipal no action there, called school board, got cold shoulder, tryied to track these guys and boy it was hard...never could find them...wierd hey! True!!

Gaurd our schools! Sorry for the rush...call the police on them. I am going to do that next time after what my last experiences were.

    Peace.

No, highschool is not appropriate unless it is a multi-religious course credit. I had one in my highschool nd took it with permisssion of my parents. It was not for putposes of conversion only to inform!
