Subcontractor woes?
My brother's company made the employees subcontractors, making them responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and some other things. The insurance was too costly so the workers refused to insure. They worked them anyway, but paychecks are now sporadic, sparse, and cut. Today, the employer refused to pay the workers unless they each cough up 300 dollars for insurance by 3 pm today, but none of the workers have insurance policies. Is this legal and is there anything that can be done about it?

This is a despicable tactic by that employer and as contractors go I have worked for guys like that and they are shady and that is not legal either .they probably don't have the money to pay the guys their wages and are banking on them coughing up some dough to float their debts a little longer . get a lawyer now before they file bankruptcy or skip out on you. this is terrible behavior and is unacceptable.......

Your brother's company is about to get a very large fine from the Department of Labor and a lawsuit .
I would suggest your brother (and all employees) file an immediate complaint with the state department of labor.
Without further information, as in the state or specifics of the situation, that's all I can advise.

are you in Florida? you can get workmans comp exempt.you do have to have liability insurance by law
