You receive more stars if users of the community chose to give your questions stars. Users should star a question should they find it appealing and interesting.
By staring a question the user will share the question with their extended yahoo answers network.
More general information of the staring system can be found here http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/answers/ratings/

Members like me do not consider the Stars as some treat to give an ego boost to the Asker. When we give a Star it is telling the Yahoo Answers Team to consider your Question for display in the Featured Question on the Answers Homepage.
There are a few members that will Star questions for the fun of it, but most members take giving Stars seriously.
The Star system is designed to encourage better questions.

Me and the people I'm networked with only tend to give stars to questions we either want to refer back to or we want others to notice. Ask questions that pique people's interest and you'll get more stars.
Questions of the "I want to know why my boyfriend doesn't like me anymore" variety get answers, but not stars. (Frankly, I'd rather my networked friends not even know I answer those.)

.So did I. For asking a direct question and getting a swift answer instead of having to read all the rules (which I already did and found tedious)
