Cat food Quandary - what do I feed all three cats? Two have special health issues.?

My kitten has the most sensitive stomach ever. I've tried Innova Evo, Wellness, and Royal Canin IVD dry foods. All give her diarrhea. She tried the Royal Canin Kitten food. It didn't give her diarrhea but it gave her struvite crystals. I've also tried Science Diet c/d and none of my three cats will eat it, wet or dry. I feed Merrick wet food and they like it a lot. It doesn't give my kitten diarrhea or make her vomit. Sometimes it makes her cough though.

I want to find a dry food they can all eat that will be easy on Tosca's stomach, not cause crystals, and will be safe and healthy for the other two cats. Velvet has CRF and Marina is perfectly fine. I prefer very high quality foods like Innova but so far they don't agree with Tosca's tummy. Feeding all of them separately is not an all the time option. I want to find something dry they can all eat for those times when I go out of town or something comes up that keeps me from coming home early enough to feed them their evening meal.

Update:

The vet does think there is a food allergy but we aren't sure what Tosca is allergic to. He wants her on Science Diet c/d for the urine crystals, but if she won't eat it, what can I do? (That's fine. I'm not a Science Diet fan).

Update 2:

The coughing is only with the Merrick wet, and usually with the turkey so another vet and I are thinking maybe a turkey sensitivity but that wouldn't explain the problems with dry food. I'm wondering if it could be an allergy to a common binder in dry foods as opposed to a meat or carb source??? Just a thought off the top of my head.

    Hi Angie

I think you know what I would say about feeding any dry foods so I won't give you the same spiel I always give.

You know with the CRF you want to keep the phosperous low and many wellnes and merrick canned are fine for that.

I don't belive there is such a thing as a dry food good for sensitive stomachs even counting that garbage prescription stuff. So merrick seems to agree with all except for the cough

Does it only happen with merrick? Has an inflamation of the airways been ruled out? No asthma right?

Could it be so simple that maybe your cat likes merrick so much that she eats too fast? You can break it down to small ortions if that's the case. If some f the canned foods give diarreah, you can try adding some acidoupholous to the food.(available in healthstores or online)

Going away, not going to be home in time to feed the

bosses? Food timers! You can set them to open at certain ties, stay open for x amount of timne ect.

U giving fluids? Hope that is going well

my mom's cat has a problem with throwing up a lot, she has always had digestion problems. well iams came out with this dry food for digestion problems and she loves it and has actually stopped throwing up. It's in a pink bag. My other cat loves science diet for sensitive stomach. I know you tried science diet, but i don't know if you tried this type. Also the coughing thing sounds kinda weird. I never heard of food making a cat cough unless they are having problems chewing it whole. Maybe she even has some hairball issues going on. Good Luck

  • Hill Science Diet I/D (stands for intestinal diet). This is the best food that you can get for a cat with sensitive stomach, and it comes in dry and wet. This food is very bland and will not harm any of your cats. They can all eat it. As for the crystals- does one of your cats have them already? If so the hills Science diet C/D is a good choice. This food can also be eaten by any of your cats and may be sensitive enough to feed Tosca. These foods are only sold at veterinarians so you will have to go to a local vet and see if they offer it.

Hi there have you tried any of the IAMs cat food products or the Purina cat chow products? Purina has a dry cat food for cats who have urinary tract issues. Iam has a multi cat formula which works well for cats who need to gain weight while their counter parts need to loose weight and it also has hair ball control and other health stuff worked in. hope this helps!

i have a cat that has allergies and he's on all sorts of foods as well, and i have tried all of the ones you have and the same thing, gave my cats diarrhea. now, i'm trying Purina One for Sensitive Stomachs.

Highly digestible ingredients, like rice and oat meal, for your cat’s sensitive stomach

    • High-quality protein, including turkey and egg, promotes easy digestion

    • High levels of skin-essential nutrients (Vitamin E and Omega Fatty Acids) help avoid dry skin

    • Formulated with yogurt and other highly digestible protein sources

So far my male cat, who is the sick one, has been doing ok, but he's only been on it for 2-3 weeks. my female cat who is healthy, loves it, so i don't think that you have to worry about your other cats not eathing it.

i provided the Purina One web site. I really hope this helps out.

p.s. one thing that i have learned from all this is not only is this really expensive, but never give cats natural or organic foods. these foods DO NOT provide the right nutrition for them even though it says they do. i learned that the hard way.

If Tosca has a sensitive stomach you might want to try California Natural. I'd also check with the vet to see if there might be some kind of food allergy involved.
