Crying meow?

I don't really know how to explain this. This has been going out for the past couple of weeks with Wylie, when it's either before or after I let him out (with Marshall) in the afternoon, after I hear him scratching the taped aluminum foil on the rug, (since M & W have scratched a part of the rug two months ago). I open the door and he's there like with a crying or whiny meow, mouth wide open. Is he lonely and miss me? Is it for attention? What does it mean? I come see him for five minutes to calm him out and he's fine. Then later I hear him later. Sometimes I spray him with out. How can I stop him from doing it again? Any ideas?

Update:

I don't think he's mating. Marshall and Wylie get along and I don't think he's territorial. He has Marshall for a friend.

Update 2:

When I meant I let him out, I didn't mean outside, since I live in a condo. I meant I open up his bedroom door he shares with Marshall to go to my room or other rooms. I let him out of his room, simply.

This could be one of several things. If he isn't altered he could be wanting to go out and find a female. Or he could be upset about the tin foil covering his favorite spot. He might think you will remove it. Also he just might not like the doors being closed. He could just want your attention. Or it could be all of the above. Now you will have to figure it out. Or get used to the meowing. Evita

,by opening his mouth he is using his extra sensory of smell which is in the back of his mouth, when he is scratching, he is actually bringing up the smell with the vocals he's using, means someone else is marking the territory and hes not happy about it, the best thing to do is for you to wash the area and the rug, its hard to get out the smell, and even though washing he may be able to still smell it. Spraying it with fa-breeze after wards, should mask the smell, and make him more comfortable in his own territory. its sounds like wylie is not a happy camper over this. :)

I would leave all the doors (to rooms) open all the time. Cats don't like to have limited access - they like full access.

Your cat may just want your attention. Cats need to be stimulated and get their exercise. People don't like to sit by themselves all day, why would cats.

Whenever we go out, we turn the tv on low so the cat can hear it and he is okay. He hates silence during the day and he HATES closed doors.

    Good Luck.

I assume he is fixed. But cats often annoy their 'owner' by demanding to go out, and then immediately often wanting to come back in. Many times, a cat will want to check the scent pattern in the yard, to see if there have been changes. If there are changes, then that must be investigated. No changes, and time to go back inside and go to sleep.

Cats live in a world of scents, and opening his mouth is increasing his intake of scents.

Since you let him out, there is probably little that you can do to change things. As he gets older, he will probably become more mellow.

    Hi Kristen:

Your cat is spoiled rotten. The meaning of the term "cat's meow" refers to a business transaction with a salesman that could sell you a gold Caddy and you receive a 1929 T-model with flat tires. The term, "smooth as a cat's meow" comes from the disposition of a cat that whines until it wins your heart. They can be almost human with their character and humble disposition when they want saomething from you---and know what they want! They will cry meows, purr gently and do anything to get your attention.

Don't be fooled by the "cat's meow". They need to learn to survive, with or without you. Of course I love pets---dogs and cats---and it is awful hard to not respond to their pitiful cat's meow!

  • Xander does that...I think he's looking for a mate and the only female in the house is me.

Itty Bitty and Isidore don't do this. Actually, Isidore hasn't done any crying since Xander joined us
