If my U.S. passport expires while I'm in Canada for a week of vacation, will I be able to cross the border?

I just went to take my passport out and I realized that I may have a big problem!

My passport will expire on August 8, a few days after I wanted to cross into Canada by car, and a few days before I wanted to return.  I can't find my birth certificate.  I have a driver's license for proof of identity, but I wonder how the expiration of the passport will impact what they consider to be proof of citizenship.

In light of all the tough new rules, what sort of risk would I be taking by approaching the border with driver's license and a soon-to-expire passport in hand?  (I'll be travelling with my family, who all have current passports.)

You will be fine for now. The US does not require a passport for land crossings yet. Your license and passport are sufficient to show identity and citizenship. The US only requires a passport for air travel under the western hemisphere travel initiative until Jan. 08 or Jun 09 (depending on which agency you talk to)

you will need either your birth certificate or passport by land and the same plus (if no passport) a receipt showing you have filed for your passport to go by air.  In January you will need a passport.

The constitution may say differently if you are a US citizen, but you would still have to prove you are, which means....
