better to give 2 weeks notice before or after taking a vacation?

Your feelings are right.. do it after. If you do it before you could be canned on the spot and then you will be thinking about that while you are on vacation.

If the company wanted to release you they could do it in one day and not feel anything.. so why the guilt?

I'd definitely wait 'til I got back to give the notice. Maybe if you talk to your supervisor or boss before leaving and then offer the official notice when you get back...your vacation will be less stressful because of this.

If you give your notice before, they'll tell you just not to come back. If you want to work for two weeks after the vacation, just give notice when you come back. If you want a 4 week vacation, give notice before you take your trip.

My question to you is why did you take all those sick days. The rule in San Francisco sick leave is not to take sick days unless we are really out sick like the one that let's you stay in bed and can't move a muscle or for a doctor's appointment. Why did you abuse the sick leave policy? Do not give your boss an ultimatum or else he can fire you and find someone else to take over your position. In this crazy economy, if one has a job, one should be grateful to have a job. Just apologize for abusing the sick leave and hoping that he will give you paid time off for your birthday.

I would give notice after your vacation. You can make it look as though something "just came up" while you were away. Don't even think of cancelling your vacation! You need to start your new job fresh. Who know when your next one will be.

If you are getting two weeks "paid vacation." Keep your

mouth shut. if not. it would be proper to give them the two

weeks notice, so they have a chance to find you a replace-

ment. and you won't have a "hard time" getting your last pay

check. and would look good on your record for future

advancement. :-})

go for afterwards, because your company will turn your vacation into your two week notice and not pay you...(I'm sure you get a paid vacation....)

i agree with the second one. if you give notice before you go they might let you go on the spot.
