Can Girl Cats Spray?

My next door neighour got a Cat 2 years ago. She was about 1 yr old and was already neutered. I have seen this cat called Daisy spraying a tree in my garden and now my car is smelling of cat wee. Can girl cats Spray? I though it was only boys. I had a girl cat and she never done that. I don't want to sound stupid by asking my neighbours if they are sure their cat is a girl.

Update:

I actually seen the cat shaking her tail and spraying. I don't plan to accuse the cat next door of peeing on the car cos there is nothing I can do about it anyway.

I do feral cat rescue and have 20 cats, myself.

Yes, girl cats can spray. So can boys who are neutered. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen.

  • Cats of both gender spray, to mark territory or express unhappiness at changes going on around them. More commonly it is carried out by males, but female cats do it as well. Most people have their cats neutered and spayed before they reach sexual maturity, which prevents this habit from developing, but some cats will continue even after having the op.

Cats squat when they urinate, however spraying is carried out in the standing position against vertical objects. Typically the cat backs up to the target, points it's tail upwards and sprays a shot of urine.

As a matter of fact, yes. I've a 10 year old female cat. Strangely, I did caught her 'spraying' in the kitchen, usually during mating season. But that was a few years ago while she was active. Another strange thing is that she's spayed.

Well, I bought this product called 'Get Off My Garden' spray repellent and its useful to prevent dogs and cats from marking their territory around your house and garden. You can pretty much find this sorta product in most pet stores.

Females can and sometimes do spray, neutered or not. However it isn't usually pungent, if your car smells strongly of cat I'd suggest it's actually a passing tom that's doing what you can smell. Daisy's probably taken offence and what you've seen is her trying to cover it up.

All cats can do some form of spraying, fixed or not and this is especially with outdoor cats. It is no different in a house cat tahn in a larger wild cat. It is marking it's territory! There must be other outside cats in your area taht make this little female think she needs to mark her space. She is warning other cats to stay away.

  • My present cat Mitzi does not.... My previous cat (now living with my ex) did, she would back up to stuff, shake her tail, and spray.

It did not have a very strong odour unless it went stale before it was cleaned up, but it was a real pest all the same !

This is called "scent marking" and can be done by both males and females, neutered, spayed or not. It can be brought on by territorial behavior, stress, or dominance issues. Just because you see a cat shaking her tail does not mean she is scent marking. She could just be very, very happy.

My family had a female some years ago, a black persian, who sprayed. She was very dominant and assertive, though a great mother. None of her daughters inherited the behaviour.

Can't spray but she may be peeing on your tree.

Are you sure it's that cat that's peeing on your car tires or are you just assuming becuase it's the closest cat. Be absolutely sure before you start trouble.
