How snug should a cat's collar be?

I've bought my cat her first collar (it's a breakaway collar), and I'm not sure if it's too tight. I can put on 1 finger in between her neck and the collar and it's snug - but is that too snug? If I give it too much room, she gets it stuck in her mouth...

I always read it should be two fingers. When I got my kitten her first collar I did too fingers and it was too loose. She managed to get her bottom jaw caught up in the collar but wasn't strong enough to get it off (it was breakaway). Thankfully I was home when it happened. I tightened it to one finger and checked it at least twice at week if not more. Once she got a bit bigger, like 6 pounds, I loosened it to one and a half fingers, then to two fingers. I just used my judgement as to how loose it seemed for her neck size and how bothered she was by the collar. The more comfortable she was with the collar, the more slack I felt I was able to safely give her. Now she gets two fingers and that's plenty of room.

What I heard it should be at least a finger to two fingers underneath the collar. It should not be too snug or the cat can't breath.

One finger between her neck and the collar is tight enough. Check this weekly if the cat is still growing or you notice a weight gain. I had a cat once that was outgrowing the collar and I didn't realize it. She could have chocked to death.

You should be able to fit 2 man size fingers between the collar and you cat's neck.

Usually 2 fingers in between the collar and kitty's neck is needed. As long as you cannot get it over her head.

2 fingers should be able to fit under the collar without making it uncomfortably tight.

My vet said that, if you can stick your finger sideways in between the neck and the collar, that that is the perfect fit. Tighter than that can cause choking and looser can be chewed on by your cat.

if you can fit your finger in the middle of it and your cat, its fine! If it is too big, your cat will realize that if she pulls with it in her mouth hard enough she will be able to get it off. as long as you don't have to pull on the collar to fit your finger in everything is fine!

Not being a cat lover, I could give you a wise guy answer, but I think that if you can slide your finger in between, you have enough room
