I am fostering a kitten from the spca. She is taking Viralys. Is she contagious? I have a cat and ..?

I am a foster "parent" for a kitten. I picked her up today. I have to give her medicine for about a week and then take her back to the spca. The medicine is Viralys. I did not even ask the director what the medication was prescribed for. She knows that I have children, a cat and a dog. So I don't think she'd give me the cat if it was contagious. I've looked up this med and it says it's for feline herpes. If anybody knows about this disease please let me know if it is contagious. I want to help them by treating this cat but if it is going to infect my cat then it isn't worth it! My cat is outside on the sun porch right now so he hasn't even been in contact with the kitten.

Viralys is an l-lysine suppliment. It is often used on cats and kittens that are suspected of having herpes, which is a chronic eye infection. However, sometimes it is used in young kittens who have chronic URI's or eye infections to help boost the immune system. The herpes test is pretty expensive, so shelters don't usually run this test. If the SPCA thought that the kitten really did have herpes, they should have told you that it can be infectious to other cats. However, I adopted a cat with suspected herpes over a year ago, and none of my other cats gave any symptoms, so it is not always contagious. You really need to contact the SPCA and ask them why the kitten is getting this medication and make sure that they know that you have another cat in the household. As for the dog and child, feline herpes ins't transferable to them! Good Luck!

I have a foster kitten right now too. And I have 4 cats of my own and 3 dogs. The kitten (Joe Dirt) is in the bathroom with his litter box, bed, toys and (his idea, not mine) an unrolled roll of t.p. I've fostered lots of cats and kittens and I try very hard to keep them somewhat quarantined until I know they are safe. It's just good sense - and according to my cats, good manners. I had a litter where 2 developed feline herpes. I was glad they were quarantined. It is contagious cat to cat. I don't know about Viralys. Could it be for something else as well?

I looked up several sights about 'feline herpes' and they seem to agree that it is very contagious from cat to cat, but not to humans or dogs. Here is one site:

Also, if the SPCA is already closed, call an all night vet or clinic and get more expert information from them. I would keep the cats separate until I find out how long the kitten has to take the medicine before it is no longer contagious. It's great that you are trying to help like this, but I understand your concern.
