The cardiovascular system works in direct conjunction with the respiratory system. When you take a breath in the air goes all the way down into the alveoli or air sacs. Each alveoli has a capillary that runs right up against it. Both of them are one cell thick. This is what provides transference of oxygen and CO2 across the membranes. The oxygen is pumped around the body by the heart. As the oxygen is used the blood picks up CO2 and brings it back to the lungs for disposable.

All of the previous answers are correct, but one system was omitted: The Renal system. The respiratory system and Renal system work hand in hand to maintain the proper pH of the body. 7.4 is ideal 7.35 to 7.45 is within normal limits. The kidneys use bicarbonate to offset CO2 if we breathe too slow or too fast and visa versa. It's more complicated than this, but that is the basic premise.

Your body has an intricate system of working together to perform the action of breathing. You have to have your brain functin for involuntary movements such as breathing and your heart has to be strong enough to pupmp oxygenated blood through the body from the lungs through the heart to veins. You need to have all function to an extent. If you are on life support all of the mechanisms are working through a machine.

The circulatory system is what transports the oxygen received absorbed by the alveoli. Red blood cells carry the oxygen because of the hemoglobin they have. The nervous system involuntarily sends messages from the medulla omblogota (brain stem) through motor nerves. The immune system defends the lungs from any respiratory infections. The lymphatic system transports lymph which cleans tissues. The skeletal system supports the respiratory system....is that enough??

If this one is not working, none of the others have a prayer.

IT is why they call it a heart/Lung machine, rather than just one or the other.
