Tipping or gift for postperson / trash collector?
Hello everyone,
This is my first year in a house (former apartment dweller).
Do you give a "holiday" gift or tip to the post person or trash collector? If so, how much?
Thank you.

I tell ya, we have is so easy in Australia! Long gone are the days when you used to have to put out a six-pack of beer for the garbos or else they'd "forget" to collect your post-Christmas rubbish. The posties? I don't think they ever got anything!
I guess you're in the USA where Christmas tipping is still very much the go because of low award wages. Just leave out a carton of of beer or a bottle of wine.

You letter carrier is not allowed to accept gifts with a value of over $20. That's a federal law. I tend to give that amount and the same to the trash collector.

I leave a card with a $10.00 gift certificate to Tim Horton's (coffee shop) for the post person and a certificate to the local mall for the paper boy. Never thought of the garbage man; I don't think I've said two words to them in all the years I've lived here. We never see them.

I don't tip the postal carrier - they are not supposed to accept tips. (but I will donate to their canned food drive. )
I tip my garbage collector - it is not a job I would like to do. I have worked it out with the company and just send in extra. I have asked the collectors and they say they do get a bonus at year end that comes from tips (more than just mine) - I tip one months bill.

I usually just give a Christmas card to show my appreciation. I have also noticed that my packages seem to be less damaged and my mail is now more organized with a rubberband holding it all together. I don't have a trash guy though. Rural residence...we burn our trash in barrels.

I wouldn't feel obligated unless you see them out there and talk to them on a regular basis. I've never seen our garbage collector, and I've only seen the mail carrier driving past after leaving mail in the box.
