My cat tolerates me and my sister fine, but attacks everyone else?

Is it just that he's feeling threatened by others, or could it be something else? We've had him since he was eight weeks old and he's always been a bit rough. When he was older, he'd hiss and swat at people. Then at about a year and a half, he attacked somebody. (!!!) I think it's irresponsible to keep him, but he's good to me... what's going on? What can I do?

Update:

He also clears the coffee table when he lays on it... stuff goes everywhere, no matter if it's a coffeecup or a heavy book. He has free reign of his domain, and trust me, it is NOT due to us being tolerant of it. :/ We were totally being strict and consistent for months, and he just had to have his way. I mean, just how many times a minute can you jump up to soak him with the water bottle? I mean SOAK. He didn't care. He's stubborn and clever.

Update 2:

My sister knew the owners of his mother, and I think maybe he didn't have enough human contact until then, or maybe he actually stayed with his mom a little TOO long. What's great is that once, they found his mother up on the ceiling fan and never could figure out how she got up there. I think I know... I've gotten her offspring to reach six feet in the air with his front paws. He can reach about 5 feet with no run-up... not bad for a housecat!!

Some cats, particularly males can be highly aggressive and territorial. It's in their personality as much as their hormones. It also would depend where you gotten the kitten- he may not have been humanized at the right age and therefore is less trusting and more wild, if you got him from a clinic, he may have been wild.

There is not much you can do, some cats are like that forever, I should know, I own a cat just like him. There are a few experts from what I've heard in the field of animal care however that act very much like discipliners, but for cats. You know, the obedience school for dogs? In Korea, we have them for some cats, but unfortunately, they're not in my town.

Wherever you are, you could try looking into that. Goodluck, and I'm very glad that you are trying very hard to keep your pet instead of abandoning him.

If attempts at modifying his behavior have failed, you might want to discuss this one with your vet. Some cats who exhibit aggressive behavior can actually benefit from medication- (i.e. "Kitty Prozac").

I have a cat who is extremely protective of myself, our other cats, and small children. When certain people attempt to approach me, he displays very aggressive and threatening behavior towards them. Because he is otherwise happy and well-adjusted, I have no problem keeping him. I do, however, make sure to put him in a bedroom or his "playpen" when the offending visitors decide to stop by, as I do not want to risk the possibility of his injuring anyone.

Best of luck with your cat!

umm in the time before you had him maybe he was mistreated by someone and has grown to trust you and nobody else. the only thing i can think of is to put him in like a cage when he is bad or when people come over
