Madeline McCann movie: is it right?

The McCann's are currently considering whether they should give permission for the disappearance of Madeline to be made into a movie or documentary. to IMG.

Sky news have confirmed that there have been talks, but if anything would be made, it would only be if it would be a good way to raise awareness.

The question is, is this a good way?

There are good topics and bad topics to make films and documentaries on. However, the definition of 'good and bad topics' can differ between people.

Personally, I think this is an appauling idea. Awareness does need to be made, but a movie is not the right way to do it in my mind.

What does everyone else think?

Enough time hasn't gone by for a movie.

The Mccanns should concentrate on finding their daughter than doing movie deals.

A movie doesn't need to made either to make awareness, she is the most famous missing child in the world.

The Mccanns and their friends can't even get their timelines straight anyway, so when they do they should be informing the Portugese police than writing movie scripts too.

I just hope she is found soon, dead or alive now.

I'm not sure if a re-enactment of that week and evening has been done yet, but I find that a better idea ...which could be shown on crime watch ...which might rejog someone's memory of anything who was also at the resort during that time.

But to be honest the whole thing stinks to high heaven, from the campaign, their relationship with Gordon Brown and Clarence to Gerry's strange blogs and their need to turn everything about them.

Mr Mitchell said a film would be considered only if the McCanns believed it would help raise awareness of the case or if it could help fund the search for the missing four-year-old.

The spokesman would not speculate on whether Gerry and Kate would play themselves in any movie or whether their roles would be played by celebrity actors.

Mr Mitchell said: “While it may be hugely entertaining and a bit of fun to think of cast lists, we are a million miles away from that sort of thing."

The possibility of a film or television project is expected to be discussed further when directors of the Madeleine Fund meet later this week.

Mr and Mrs McCann were aware of the meeting but did not attend in person. Instead, Mr Mitchell and another representative of the McCanns met IMG at the firm’s London offices.

Mr Mitchell said it was just one of many approaches that have been made by media companies.

Maybe the McCanns should consider what the Former Home Office Minister said in this press release in 2006 about Making Sure That Crime Doesn't Pay:

Former Home Office Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said:

“It is not right that criminals can make money by selling the story of their crimes. It can cause further hurt and distress to victims and their families as well as being contrary to the principles of natural justice."

“The proposals set out in this consultation are aimed at preventing convicted criminals profiting from publications about their crimes; there is no intention to limit anyone else’s profits or prevent the publishing of books or making of films."

Who is Madeline* McCann? Have I missed something recently? Is it something to do with the Oven Chips and similar products that McCann frequently advertise on TV? ;)

Sorry. No, I don't think it's a good idea but that has never stopped Kate and Gerry in the past in their desire to milk the story for all the attention they can receive. Rather than negotiate the rights to a movie, they might want to help the Portugese police with their enquiries by answering all of the questions rather than refusing to answer some like they are now.

    * actually it's Madeleine, not Madeline

A movie is wrong, however if it were made as a documentary then I see no harm in it; it will raise awareness, and what could be wrong about that when the little girl has still not been found?

Although I have to mention that according to what I have read, the McCanns themselves did not discuss this idea. One of their representatives did.. so until you hear it from the horses mouth I wouldn't expect to be seeing it anytime soon!!

It would be a good way to raise awareness, but any movie/documentary showing the McCann's and co. in the Tapas Bar scene could never portray them positively.

i wouldnt imagin the mccanns to do this. but i recon in 10 years time a movie (unrelated supposidly) will come out about a child abduction. i think a section of a documentary regarding missing children would be relevant and informal though.

I have to be desperately sorry for the McCanns, and appreciate that they would want maximum publicity - but I find it hard to believe that there is any point in further publicising the disappearance of Maddie. - The parents must accept the inevitable, however hard, and concentrate on bringing up their other two children as normally as possible

I personally don't think it's a good idea, there's something quite vulgar about it. I'm all for awareness being raised, but a film? Doesn't seem right. And in any event, how much MORE awareness can be raised? It's been force-fed down our throats since the day news broke of her disappearance.

It's hard to say. If I was in their shoes I don't know which approaches I'd take to get my daughter back. I can't help but think it's a waste of time though. I would love to have the tv or radio on one day and hear breaking news that she'd been found. To be honest though I think if she was going to be found it would of happened in the first week of her going missing.

It's as right as OJ writing a book based on "if he did kill Nicole"...i.e. in very bad taste.

Why are the McCanns still hell-bent on banning the Ben Affleck movie's release in the UK, by the way???
