Would you vote for this player for the Hall of Fame?

I like to hold back the name out so people aren't influenced by a personal feelings. All stats are approximate, but close enough so you get a sense of the player. I'm sure you can figure out who it is if you try, but that's not the objective. :-)

He's a center fielder.

15 year career (1990's - 2000's)

1,800 games

.290 BA

.375 OBA

1,800 hits

370 home runs

1,100 RBI's

1,150 runs

.530 Slugging percentage

Less than 75 stolen bases (55% SB success rate)

1,600 strikeouts

Had about the same level of post-season success in 50+ games, albeit with a little more power.

4 time All Star

7+ Gold Gloves

No MVP's, but did finish in the top 5 twice

Among the top 5 players in his league in the following categories in any given season:

Slugging - 2 times

OPS - 1 time

Runs - 2 times

Home Runs - 1 time

Walks - 1 time

Extra base hits - 1 time

Did not finish among the top 5 in any other positive offensive catergories.

In your opinion, is this player a Hall of Famer?

Update:

Yikes! I was hoping someone wouldn't post the name. lol

He's put together some impressive career counting stats, but being good for a sustained period doesn't merit HOF inclusion, in my opinion.

I think it's important that you mentioned the fact he hasn't finished top-5 too many times in any offensive category. That's a good indication that while he's been a solid contributor over a long period, he's never really been an elite player. The Gold Gloves are nice, but I'd be more impressed had he won an MVP award, or more than one Silver Slugger.

It makes sense that his comps are guys like Fred Lynn and Dick Allen, guys who were good, but not quite good enough to merit inclusion at Cooperstown. I think the same is true of this guy, who will nonetheless be remembered as a very good player.

no, and particularly not in the era of the 90/00's - those numbers would be a bit more impressive in the 60's/early 70's

1800 games and 1800 hits seems like a pretty limited career (that only comes out to about 11 full seasons - I don't think anyone who played that few games is likely to be Hall worthy)

I suppose it also depends if this player was a catcher or 2B, which are historically weak offensive positions, but there aren't enough numbers there for me to put in the Hall.

For a 15 year career, those are not HOF #'s.10 years, fine, but 15 and potentially in a downhill spiral no.

While it would be awesome to be inducted into the HOF, I am not sure why many fans think that you are somehow less of a player if you weren't. This is an honour for only the best.

This player is good, but not great. The HOF should be for great players. With less than 2000 hits and 400HRs, this player is just not HOF-type material. Only two top 5 MVP finishes? Nope, sorry - no way this guy gets into the HOF.

    Not there yet...

He might've had he not been hurt the last 2 years..

Add 40 homers..120 ribbies to that....

He still might...he finds the fountain of youth in SD...and has a big year or 2 and helps the Pads win a Series...

Right now...a no..but never say never while a guy is active....

Right now...similarity scores wise..the only comp he has in the Hall is Stargell

I agree with tomjc43 100%. I'm a Yankees fan and I still can't honestly say that Bernie Williams should be in the Hall of Fame, so I can't say the same thing about Edmonds.

No, those numbers do not relate a top tier player for an extended time. The gold glove award is ridiculous to me, so I don't put much, if any, weight into that stat.

No way. There are many other players that have matched those numbers but have not gotten in either. Now if this player would have had a distinct stat like 500 homers or 3k hits, then i'd say yes.

The problem is that he is above average in most of the categories, but aside from his gold gloves, there is nothing that sets this guy apart from most centerfielders. Most starting centerfielders hit around .300 and have 20 homers. That is all this guy has done. Plus his overall stat of only 1,800 hits is pretty low.

I would say no,however, there are a few in the Hall of Fame that have lower numbers.

Bill Mazoraski was elected in for the fact that he beat the Yankees in the 7th game of the World Series.
