Ankle sprain or something more?
I recently (just yesterday) sprained my ankle while playing basketball. The foot rolled inward, causing a sprain on the outside of the ankle. Today when i woke up and walked it hurt. I cannot point my toes up without feeling pain all the way up the outside of my shin. Yes theres swelling at the ankle. Is this just a sprain?

sounds like an inversion sprain, get an xray in case there is a hairline fracture in the talus. Use an ace wrap to control the swelling, and stay off your foot to protect it. Ice, ice.

Well, the fact that you can move your ankle and kinda wiggle your toes. It doesn't seem like a fracture. It's normal for your foot to be swollen if it's sprained. A sprain is just pulled ligaments (they were stretched too far). So pain will radiate up and down your leg when you move it. Try not to move your ankle too much. Moving it even more can cause a torn ligament. It's best just to keep it immobile for awhile. Put some ice on it for 30 minutes then put heat on it for 30 minutes. Keep down this throughout the day. By doing that you speed up the healing process. And take some anti-inflammatory pills like advil.
You should also see a doctor. Sometimes sprained ankles especially severe ones could be a torn ligament. Even what you describe doesn't seem severe, it could be. So have a doctor check it out asap.

Just a bit of advice... If you can afford it get it checked out! Ankle sprains can become a HUGE problem if not treated right.
Also, even though you can put weight on it there can still be a fracture, although it's rare.
RICE it (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and that should help it if it's just a simple sprain. Good, way to judge is check for bruising, I had a grade III sprain and my entire ankle and halfway up my leg was a nasty purple color because of all the blood from the ligaments tearing ( I tore 2 totally in half)

My doc told me that sprained ankles can actually hurt MORE than a break. I've experienced both- a few times over- and agree. If you can walk on it, it's not broken. It will be sore, stiff, and probably tender. If you keep it elevated, the swelling will go down. But it actually is good to "walk off" the sprain. Doesn't feel good, I know, but helps the healing process. Nothing wrong with painkillers during that process though! Hope you feel better. =)

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

i understand you do no longer pick to take heed to this...yet my chum is this way of activities addict as of approximately 2 years in the past, and because she purely randomly started pass us of a working and cycling interior the woodland close to her domicile, driving 3 days each week (horses) song practices 3 days each week, (sundays she is going for extra runs and motorbike rides) devoid of previous training in the past that different than for infrequent runs exterior her as quickly as each week driving instructions and college song practices (she is this way of fanatic...i do no longer see how she does it yet...) she sprains her ankle(s) a minimum of as quickly as a month. SPRAINS on no account HEAL thoroughly. her mom is a nurse and constantly reminds her of that, she wears a tensor/ace bandage, and an ankle brace, on each ankle no count if its sprained or no longer (heavier ones for while theyre somewhat sprained) because of the fact she grew to become into so reckless (and she or he's top here as I type this lol, yet she's busy ranting approximately how her horseshow grew to become into cancelled because of the fact of rain lol) she ended up rigidity fracturing an already sprained ankle enjoying volleyball, (and she or he sprained it throughout baseball). the only element she will do now's holiday. No distance working or sprinting, no cycling, purely driving, because of the fact this is the only element that doesn't injury it. she would be waiting to no longer be thoroughly healed till the tip of September, and has to spend her money that throughout many circumstances is going to horse stuff, on physio. it is protecting her back from the 800 m provincials. the tip effect sucks...this is going to heal much less in case you play...and in spite of the actuality that she nonetheless excercised, nonetheless rode, nonetheless went to hint meets and horseshows, she regrets it, because of the fact the everlasting discomfort and discomfort from braces and tensors holds her back. (she additionally has Osgood-Shlatters ailment and has to placed on 2 kneee braces on each knee at the same time as working and cycling) pass forward and play, purely be somewhat careful approximately no count if or no longer you have earlier sprained it. notice from chum: "i might pick to declare that Jamie's being dramatic...which perhaps the wording makes it look like that, yet sure i'm very harm carriers... yet no discomfort as long as i'm donning the braces...yet she's top, sprains on no account heal. I roll over on my ankle, it hurts for hours or days, if I holiday, comparable element. be careful..."
