ankle injury help please! not sure what is wrong?!?
i hurt my ankle 4 and 1/2 weeks ago and its still swollen. i had xrays showing no fractures or dislocations. i had an mri showing no tear. i was told it was an ankle contusion. i was given an aircast and was told to use crutches lightly touching my toe to the ground. i am using a walking boot and crutches now and i still have swelling and pain. i was given a prescription for pain meds. i am going to the dr tomorrow again and he said i may need a cat scan. will i need a cast if theres no fracture?
if i dont have a tear, is it still possible i have a sprain?

Although most folks associate a cast with a broken bone, they have other uses. In some cases they are just the ticket to provide support while things heal. Severe ankle sprains do sometimes benefit because a splint or cast will help hold the foot in position and prevent stress on the already injured tendons and ligaments. It's not that unusual to see swelling and pain in a severe ankle sprain even a month out from the injury- especially if you have been up and moving a lot on it. Had they told you it was broken and put you in a full cast, you would have been more likely to stay off it. Instead, to your mind nothing is broken, so things should heal faster. It just doesn't work that way though. The more you try to use that foot, the more often you are up on it and trying to force the issue, the longer it will take to repair itself. So you may end up in a cast, yes- as a means of forcing you to slow down on that foot and giving the ankle a chance to heal itself. The best thing you could do is to prop it up and stay off it unless you simply have to move. Even then, you want that to be for as brief a time as you can make it. Cast or no cast, if it doesn't get the rest it needs, it's going to take a long time to heal. And in that time, you will continue to suffer.

I Do Not Believe You Will Need A Cast For What You Stated, However There Is A Reason That Your Ankle Is Still Swelling And Whatever Complication That Is Could Lead To A CAst
But More Likely Than Not, No Cast.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

I had the same feelings and it was a terrible ankle sprain. Its been oh, 4 or 5 months and it still swells and aches. I've been told that sprains are just as bad or worse than breaks or fractures. Definitely talk to your doctor. Ice your ankle as much as you can and keep it elevated. Best of luck to you, feel better!

that's possibly ok, in case you had broken it or carried out severe ligament injury you would be in somewhat some discomfort. If it hurts, do not do wellness center the next day, you may make it worse. Is it swollen or bruised in any respect? in case you have a reasonable sprain you will have a puffy ankle. relax it as much as you could and positioned a bag of frozen veg on it each and every now and returned and commence doing workouts once you experience in a position. If it hurts once you're strolling approximately, you will choose ankle help. you ought to purchase an elastic tube bandage from pharmacies to positioned on your ankle. i think of a type is Tubi -Grip. I tore ligaments and a physiotherapist instructed me to rotate my foot around clockwise, anticlockwise, up and down, each and every few hours, then build as much as gadgets of 15. in case you have not any concern doing this then you definately are ok, in case you do then progressively do what you could to construct potential back up. No, but you should stay off of it. When you take your boot off do light message to help the blood circulate more. Try to do that often. Also use ice packs 3 or 4 times a day if possible.
You need to get that heat out of the injury so it can heal.
Hope you get better fast.

No you probably won't need a cast, but they might put on those bandages around your ankle (the ones for sprained ankles). Maybe you just bruised it REALLY REALLY REALLY bad. Maybe applying a cold compress on the swollen area will help. Hope you feel better! :-)

Get a very firm bandage for the ankle, but first apply 'Arnica' it's avaliable at health food stores and will reduce the swelling and any bruising over night! Apply the arnica, place a tissue over it and then wrap firmly! Wear this over night!
