Bone bruise on shin? Or something worse? Any advice?
Ok so I hit my shin (a little towards one side) on my wooden desk the other week. It hurt for about two hours and I couldn't walk on it well, it was bruised and slightly red and swollen (i have dark skin so it's hard to see bruises). It felt like it was burning a bit. I did not put much ice on it because I didn't have time. I could walk on it without much pain about three days later and the swelling went down.
Now I'm wondering if it was really a bruise on my bone (is that even possible) or something a bit worse. It hurts whenever I touch it and there is a bump (about two inches in width) almost around half of the shin. I can feel it when I run my hand over it. It doesn't seem like normal swelling but doesn't hurt when left alone. The surrounding area that was not hit is fine, no pain.
One thing that worries me is that a small part of the area is numb to the touch. I can feel it when I press hard (maybe because of the surrounding area?) but when tapping lightly I cannot feel.
Do you think I should see someone about it?
I live on campus at a university that has a clinic and is a distance away from a hospital. I'm not sure it the clinic is for this type of inury or if they will have an x-ray thing should I need one.
I'm not sure if this is serious enough to warrant help or if I am overreacting.
I can walk fine now and it only hurts when bumped or when I run and jump. But if hit too hard feels like a seering burning pain. The area is rather small, less than the palm of my hand.
Thanks so much for any advice!!

You're perfectly fine. Shin bruises can hurt for a couple of weeks, trust me, I know from personal experience as well as professional.
On the naval ships, the "door ways" have a slight step up we call "knee knockers"

Kinda like this one but some of them don't have the step up to it. ....Well during and emergency situation on the ship , when we have to rush to the scene, sometimes you don't quite negotiate these as weel as you should and you bang your shin really hard (thus the name "knee knockers")
Take some Excedrin, It contains both IBuprofen and acetaminophen, so it will take care of the pain and the swelling at once.

The reason it hurts so bad, and feels like its broken is because the shin has little muscle and a lot of nerve bundles. Intresting fact, if a guy were to attack you, besides the crotch, the shin is the second best place to hit them.

Hi,
As you know, your shin is very close to the skin, there are no big chunky muscles on top of the shin, l(ike your thigh), to keep things from hitting the bone.. so when you do hit it, it really hurts, and swelling may occur in the exact spot where you hit it, I wouldnt worry too much, hitting your shin in the way you described, shouldnt cause a break, and will have just temporary painful areas, and may bruise on the skin also.
This can hurt for a week or so, but should you get any problems with walking or putting pressure through your foot when walking etc.. after 2 weeks, then go see your doctor, but I think you'll be just fine.. good luck!

Yes you can bruise the bone and I think it is just a bruise. Infact I still have a lump on my shin from a bruised bone which feels a little numb aswell but I have seen my doctor and was assured it is absolutely fine.

My son was in a head-on car accident. The other car came up under the truck he was in & pushed the dash into his leg. He broke his femur & damaged his knee. 8 months after the accident he went for an MRI, which showed a deep bone bruise. He had bleeding into the knee. Our Orthopedic Surgeon said that when the bone gets bruised, it turns mushy, and that it takes a long time to heal. In my sons case it was about a year. The OS also said it is a very bad injury to have, and it takes alot of force to bruise the inside of a bone. I really don't think you need another opinion, maybe just an MRI to see how bad it is, so you have a better idea of how long it's going to take to heal

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org/ ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!
