Senior Citizen Self-Designed Retirement Home?
If you had the chance to help design a new group home for the over-50 set, with minimal medical, but still a safe place, what would you like to add to the house? Assuming we have a nice kitchen and other basics, for our age group, what would be great?
Garage for you guys to do your car work in? Small dance floor for parties? How about a garden (ok, that's for me!) And a sun roof, definately eco-friendly too.
um, keep it clean - we don't want the kids to see!
These are so GREAT!!

hmmm, First off, attention to details would be important to me. Are the plumbing fixtures easy to use, door knobs easy to operate. Are the halls and walkways wide and free from clutter? Are there adequate handrails? Are the storage spaces easy to reach? Are smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors well placed and operational? Are the floors level, and free of hazards like uneven surfaces or edges of rugs? Is it easy to maneuver in the bathrooms?
I love your idea for a garden; how about adding some garden furniture and places to hangout in the garden-garden paths, tables and chairs, lights, maybe even a gazebo or covered porch/patio.
Internet access; maybe a router so several people could do email or surf the internet at once.
A combination game room, library, music room. A room with tables and chairs, where people could congregate to play games, share books and magazines, and maybe sing or play musical instruments or listen to cds.
A combination crafting and workshop space. Include benches, tables, cabinets, easals, and maybe even display shelves. Good overhead and task lighting.
Your ideas seem like fun, good luck!

I am not far from senior status and work in a company that is non medical that cares for primarily seniors.
I would love to see several common areas to mingle in- a game room that allows for card games, billiards, or any other group games that they wish; a music/ movie room that had a great stereo system for dancing or allowed for comfy, movable seating for movie nights that were voted on.
A garden area that was body friendly- raised beds of varying heights that can be worked in by both the standing and seated.
A swimming pool that is heated and a jacuzzi that is accessible.
An exercise room with machines and aerobics classes.
Apartments with real kitchens for those that enjoy baking or cooking, and others with service kitchens for small meals or snacks and a common dining area for when you don't want to cook!
Cleaning and laundry service should be included, a barber shop/beauty parlor on the premises and a small convenience shop that stocks the basic necessities.
Well, since I am dreaming, throw in a massage therapist on site, transportation to the local library that has computer classes, as well as cable tv and internet hookup in each apartment!
And of course the building is wheelchair accessible, has 24 hour security at the front desk and guest apartments that can be reserved when family comes to visit!

Absolutely an exercise room, Lots of task lighting , more wall outlets so lighting is available where needed ,a pool, many over 50s like to do there exercises ,and plain old swimming,Large lot so in good weather activities could be held outdoors, also wide paved walking paths, last but not least allow pets

Swimming pool, tennis courts, game night (not bingo) garden would be great. I have herbs (legal herbs for big brother who's always watching), tomatoes & peppers.I'm starting lettuce tomorrow.
PETS! No place seems to want to allow pets anymore. I have 3 dogs & 2 cats. I've taken in rescues all my life & can't imagine living without animals in my life.
Speaking of animals, how about horses? I can't do heavy work, but & could brush them & clean their hooves.
Lake or river for fishing, swimming, boating.
A bar. A fun bar, with a different type of music every night so everyone gets what they want.
Comedy. I wouldn't have survived this long without it.

Wow a retirement home setting. How about a home setting built and then build a mall, golf course and theme park around the community.

i did that with my living quarters now -- all on one level = no steps what so ever to get into the house --- garage is over sized (24x 24) and part of house -- all doors are 36 inch wide --- no load barring walls and very few of them -- open baths and bedroom has walls rest open areas!!!! plenty of natural light -- sun room on south side (i live in illinois need heat not shade) back up wood heat (which has become primary) plug ins are 24 inches off floor!!!!

How about a pool? My sister says that would be awesome, it would be good for aerobics as well as fun time... a game room, with a pool table. Home theater, for movie night.
