facebook group- Illegal or just mean?
There was a group on Facebook that was "If you have ever been annoyed, dissed, or creeped out by (name of person) hten join!".
Or a title like that.
The girl who was talked about on htat group- however, actually did everything that people wrote in htat group. People wrote tehir experiences with that girl, and as a very level headed person, I can honestly say that she has seriously offended people and could be on hte borderline of having rpeversion issues. She respects no one and, as an honest person, probabl needs some pschiatric help. However, when she found out about this group- she told the dean of students- and it was removed from Facebook. Is this legal? We have freedom of speech, and as long as we're not threatening ehr, can it be couted as cyberbullying? All we were doing was sharing our experiences that we had with her (which were all mildly disturbing).

Facebook, like almost every other website that hosts user content, reserves the right to delete anything for basically any reason they want (If I said something offensive or stupid in this answer yahoo would probably delete it too). I think it's still unclear whether or not the first amendment applies here.
Did the school do anything to the person who made the group? A kid from my school a couple years ago made a facebook group about his roommate and got kicked out of his dorm for it. Apparently he did some other bad things too, but I still think it was uncalled for to send an out of state first year student a letter that says "your housing contract has been terminated effective 12 hours from now"

Not illegal to have it, not illegal to get it booted off. However, extremely juvenile to handle a problem with someone in that way. If you really have a problem with a person, you need to grow up and just tell them. Her need for psychiatric help is none of your business if the worst thing she did was offend you. Why didn't you try talking to her? You know if she has some issues, there is probably a reason. Maybe she needed a friend and not to be ganged up on. And maybe she is just a bee otch. In that case.. ignore her. I would have to say most definitely the people with the facebook thing were definitely in the wrong.

Honestly, i think its ironic that the people who were getting annoyed, dissed are making a group about the girl and doing the exact same thing. I think you guys should forget the group and be the bigger person... seeing how you are old enough to act that way in the first place.

Well, would you like such a group about you? Of course you wouldn't. This is definately cyber-bullying (if there ever was such a thing) and it's just plain mean and immature. There is no difference between this and publishing a daily newsletter about someone in which you bash this person. Also, from a legal point of view...anything you say about someone in public which causes them harm had better be true and you had better be able to prove it or else your screwed if they sue you (which they should).

if someone's reports the group it will most definately get deleted. This can have a very negative effect on a person and should not be done so the guys at facebook should be notified of such doings and delete that group

upload, post, transmit, share, store or otherwise make available content that, in the sole judgment of Company, is objectionable or which restricts or inhibits any other person from using or enjoying the Site, intimidate or harass another;....these were taken from Facebook's Terms of Use. It is Legal to have it removed, common sense, freedom of speech does not apply to facebook.

"Is this legal? We have freedom of speech..."
This is a disturbing sentiment. Freedom of speech means that we can state our minds without fear of repercussions -- for example, we can say something like "I don't like Bush" or "I don't like Hillary". Expressing such sentiments publicly can get you shot in other countries.
But "freedom of speech" does not mean you can say whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want. Rules, responsibilities, and common sense guidelines still apply.
Facebook has the right to remove any group that IT considers harmful or threatening. Please don't whine about "freedom of speech" when someone rightfully corrects what you are doing. Facebook's right to protect itself from possible liability and lawsuit trumps your desire to express yourself. Most of all, they are not infringing on your speech "freedoms" by refusing to host your group.

I don't think this particular case is legal, but I heard about a grown woman posing as a 16 year old boy on myspace, and bullying a 17 year old girl until she attempted suicide. They probably removed it on principle, and they could argue that in court using examples like that.

Even if all these things are true you guys are just wrong for doing that and aren't any better than her. I dont know if it's legal or not but don't act like your not doing anything wrong. geez... grow up.
I have never heard anything as messed up as this and really think you need to think about what your doing and i hope you get in a lot of shi* for being so cruel.

I'd have to agree with you that it is in fact illegal to have a public forum removed by the dean of your school UNLESS in fact the girl was being slandered. Slander is illegal.
I'm all for free speech so I suggest you talk to your dean about it or make an appeal to facebook and see what their policy is. You could really turn things around if you could get a lawyer on your side. Good luck!
