Yes, kitties can develop diabetes. I have a diabetic kitty and have been treating her for almost 6 years. She will be 15 years old in June.

Kitties usually develop diabetes from eating the grain filled dry foods, ie, corn, wheat, and rice. The telltale signs are agressive appetite but loosing weight, excessive drinking and excessive urination, changes in coat condition (mine had a wet or oily look). Their breath will have an acetone type odor..like fingernail polish remover.

If kitty is older and hasn't had a wellness examination in a while, it might be a good idea to schedule one. The vet will draw blood for senior wellness blood panel that will check the thyroid, kidneys, liver, CBC and blood glucose. The vet may obtain urine for analysis also. This will confirm or rule out any of the senior kitty illnesses.

The normal blood glucose (BG) for a kitty is 70 - 170. When the diabetes is diagnosed the BG is usually extremely high (mine was 605). Kitties are started on insulin therapy. Insulin is available in pill form as well as injectible. The injectible is preferred. Kitty should be put on a grain free diet, unfortunately the vet prescribed diabetic diet is not the best available.

My kitty was insulin dependent off and on up until a few months ago. I have modified her diet (with her vet's approval) to an all canned, gluten free diet. I am so happy to say her BG is in the completely normal range (average 113 - hometested with a glucose meter) and she is not passing any glucose in her urine either (checked with keto-diastyx). This is wonderful news for her and her kidneys.

If your kitty is diagnosed, here is a wonderful website to start your research. The link is below.

    Purrs to you and kitty.

Yes, cats can get diabetes. And they can be tested with a glucometer, the same as diabetic people use.

If diabetes is caught early, and treated properly, a diabetic cat can still live a long and relatively healthy life. If you suspect diabetes, take your cat to the vet now.

Yes cats can get diabetes, if she is overweight then she is more likely to have health problems. I have a fat female cat to she got chubby after I got her spayed! She went to the vet and got put on a diet and has so far lost almost a whole pound! She has only been on the diet for about a month! I would take kitty to your vet and get her a check-up for your own piece of mind and for her best health interests.

Cats do get diabetes. The symptoms are frequent urination and increased thirst, among other things. Cats fed dry food are very prone to diabetes, as carnivores aren't designed to process carbohydrates and can become insulin resistant. Since dry foods require carbs, grains or potatoes, to be made they aren't ideal nutrition for a cat. Switching your cat off dry food to a quality canned (or raw) food with no gravy and avoiding grains, fruits and vegetables can greatly minimize the risk of diabetes.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/XJDwb

As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

Cats can actually get diabetes. I suggest taking her to a vet and they get her some therapy or some way to get exercise. I hope you the best with your cat. :)

Yes, they can. My brother's cat is diabetic and they have to give her shots. I have no idea why people gave a thumbs down to the first two answers above...they were right on!
