Woo Hoo! Samsonov signed for 3 years!?

Reactions? Terms of deal are 2.3 first year, 2.5 second year and 2.8 third year.

This is very good. Since we picked him up, he's only been second to Staal in scoring (around the same timeframe where Staal led the NHL in scoring, Which was after Brind'Amour went down)

He's also played well in our own end, and well, genearally been great for us. 32 points in 38 games...

We also signed Stefan Chaput and Nick Dodge... Nick Dodge could be quite the steal, but he suffers from being a center on a team that has a lot of them, including Brandon Sutter probably coming up next year.

Anyway, thoughts?

Update:

Oh, Sutter will be up next year. he's too young to play in the AHL except now since his junior team is out of it.... Next year it's NHL or Juniors. And I think JR wants him up in the NHL.

I'm psyched out of my mind about Samsonov coming back, when we picked him up, I was like "Oh God, he's going to suck." but JR really knows what he's doing, and Samsonov looked fantastic, it was a night and day difference. He was a vital part of our team for the second half of last year.

I don't know that much about Chaput and Dodge, I have a feeling they'll spend most of the year up in Albany.

I hope Brandon Sutter plays in the NHL next year, and I have a feeling he will, JR wants him to I think, but I don't know if he'll start the year with us, I think he'll start off in Albany, and make his way down to Carolina as the year progresses.

I really hope that Ryan Bayda stays here in Raleigh with us, he played so well, he really doesn't deserve to get sent back up to Albany. I think that if he can't play here in Raleigh the Canes should let him go and find another team where he can play in the NHL because he deserves that chance.

Not a good signing at all - he is the type of player that is much more suited for one-year contracts only...then when he under-achieves (as he always eventually does), it's easy to let him go...

Sorry man, your GM got fleeced with this deal...

EDIT: After winning Rookie of the Year and looking like the next superstar, his performance cannot be looked as as anything but underachieving...He left Boston disgraced, Montreal and Chicago did nothing, played in Edmonton for a cup of coffee, and has 32 good games in Carolina? Did I miss anyone? Regardless, it says something when a guy that young has been shipped around so much - he always disappoints...and that's why almost $3 million a year for three years is a mistake and a waste of cap space...

I was so happy to hear that they signed him!!! I knew they would because he did so great for the canes!! I think he is a great addition to the team.

He played great and helped step up the game when Brind'amour went down.

I am definately looking forward to watching him play next season and seeing what line he will play on.

And it should be interesting if Brandon Sutter comes up next year.

I'm hoping Sutter will come up and play for the canes if he fits in the roster. I think he will be a good addition.

Yeeeyyuhh, I'm so glad he decided to stay. I just read the news in my inbox.

I think he did a great job once he came to Carolina and I think the Hurricanes are making a good investment in him. His talent exploded - I guess this is where he feels comfortable and fits in well. I hope that they (the team) can keep the chemistry they were developing in the latter half of the season.

    "Samsonite" is staying, hoo-ray!

What other changes/signings/trades do you think they'll make?

I think this was an excellent decision for Carolina to re-sign him. Though I have to agree I'd have gone for a one or two year deal, to ensure that those 32 games with Carolina this season were not a fluke.

I'm not sure why you refer to him as an underacheiver CNTM. Except for his season with the Canadiens and his short period with Chicago he has always been a reliable player.

Glad to see him doing well. But after the Mtl /Chi experiment I would be a little leary of a 3 year contract. This guy can be moody and pull a disappearing act.

Lity will be sad as I am sure he wanted him back with the hawks:-)

That's a pretty good move. He's always been a reliable player, and should contribute on most of his shifts as he's done in the past.

Oh I am happy for him. He has struggled since he left Boston and I am glad he is back to being his old self with Carolina.

I echo CDN FAN's sediments......too long for a guy that disappears. Bad move IMO.....if they wanted to take a CHANCE with a one year deal, then fine....but 3 years is foolish.

  • Thanks Carolina.................that's one less nightmare I have to worry about.

'Good Riddance' still comes to mind.

Obviously Carolina/Laviolette were a better fit for his skill than Chicago, Montreal, and Edmonton. He's got skill that people marvel at in practice, but it disappears in the game. If he plays to his potential, I think $2.53333333MM is a steal. If he doesn't.................let me say 'I told you so' now, at my age..............one never knows!
