old cat losing weight rapidly?

i have a 15 year old cat who used to be huge. the last year or so he has been losing weight, but even more so in the last 2 months. he still has a shiny healthy coat, bright eyes, doesnt seem to be in any pain, grooms himself constantly, and can still even catch mice or lizards. he doesnt seem lethargic, but he is eating heaps, i feed him meat several times a day plus he has all the dry food he can eat and he still keeps looking for food.

does anybody have any idea why he would be losing so much weight?

Update:

as we live on a big property and he goes far away to do his business its really hard to see if all thats normal.

Update 2:

definately cant be worms, it was the first thing i thought of but he is wormed regularly. i looked up hyperthyroidism and he has alot of the symptoms for that, so thanks everyone.

and now for the uncanny part, i was diagnosed with graves disease, which is a form of hyperthyroidism about 5 months ago! thats kind of creepy huh! i will be taking my much loved cat to the vet for a thorough checkup asap!

sounds like thyroid problems, very common in older cats. this is easily confirmed with a blood test at your local vet. if it is hyperthyroidism the disease is easily maintained with cheap medication daily or twice daily depending on the dose.

because your cat is desperately trying to get nutrients by eating lots but is losing weight, obviosuly this is life threatening!

PS. It is NOT just the aging process!! while more problems occur the older a cat gets, most are TREATABLE and doing so will extend the life of your pet! please dont just let your companions die - improve the quality of their life!! i have seen plain old moggies reach a ripe old age of 21-23yrs!! an it is common for burmese and siamese cats to reach 18-20yrs!! this is all done with good care by their owners!!

First off 9 is not old. Cats can live past 20 so don't attribute anything to age here 2ndly, you probably did the worst thing. This isn't worms unless you have seen them. Is there excess drinking? There are many treatable possibilities here like diabetes, hyperthyroid ect. By not going to the vet,fo a much needed blood test, this poor cat is probably being condemned Find a way to go to the vet

    hyperthyroid (over active)

    diabetic

    renal/hepatic failure

    cancer

although the last two are probably remote since he is still feeling well.... sounds very likely that it is hyperthyroidism- he can have a lot of energy, eat a lot, drink a lot, and still loose weight-- this can be a very serious problem but is treated easily with medications-- many older cats have this problem

if he were diabetic, i would think he would start slowing down by now, and maybe even start to get sick (after being a diabetic for a while a pet will get sick- lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drinking, urinating, loss of appetite)

it's the agin process butif you are worried get him to a vet and have him checked out. My oldest cat is 18 and has been losing weight like crazy lately but she still eats and drinks water and is playful, so i am not too worried about her but i know her time with me is coming to an end soon and yes I will cry like a baby..she was my first baby..

Is he drinking excess water? That would be a sign of diabetes. Significant weight loss can be a sign of makor problems and I would really see a vet. Thyroid is also a possibility. Both mentioned are easily treatatable

Is he peeing and pooping normal? I had a cat with the same symptoms that was going into kidney failure. I did not catch it in time we ended up having to put her down. It was a very sad experience but now I always check to make sure my other cat's bathroom habits are normal so if it does happen again I will catch it in time. Hope this helps you!

It sounds like he may have worms, as you are describing all the symptoms. I think the best thing to do is take him to the vet for a check up. They can give him a worming tablet if he needs it and take a few blood tests to check that it is nothing else.

    Best Wishes.
