What is the difference between manual transmission and automatic transmission?

Basically, a manual transmission has a "manually" controlled clutch and a manually controlled gear selector. This means that you must control the two of those yourself. There is also more to a manual transmission than that, such as rev matching, engine braking, etc. In an automatic transmission the clutch is replaced by a torque converter which is a liquid controlled clutch, meaning it's automatic and will not allow the engine to stall. The gears are also automatically controlled by the pressure of the oil as the transmission revs. Which there is also electronically controlled transmissions which selects the gear with the best fuel economy. Automatic gearboxes are completely different from manual gearboxes as automatic gearboxes use a set of planetary gears and seperate clutches to engage different gears. Manual transmissions uses interlocked gears which you use a dog ring to manually select your gears. I hope that covers what you are asking.

First of all anybody with one foot can drive an automatic! Manual transmission reqires use of left foot and right hand at same time (sometimes hard fo run-cordinated people)!
Automatic has some "slippage" in use, - and that costs you a small amount on mileage. Standard gives you beter control of gears you "want to be in". Also better "feeling' verhivcle on slick roads! Properly used an automatic (still) may not last as long as standard, and probably will cost more to repair! However if you don'y treat clutch properly, you will need to replace clutch occasionally! Though at least the standard transmission is a whole lot esasier to take out! (Which has to be done to get clutch out for replacement)!
Personally (as old mechanic), - I would take a standard over automatic "any day of the week"! Have had far better luck with standards, -- I have never owned a new car, - and mostly mine are over 100K when I get tehm, -- so I have no idea how they have been treated, - but it is easier and cheaper to replace a clutch than an automatic transmission!

Manual requires one to shift through the gears while an automatic transmission you put it in Drive and the transmission does the shifting.
Auto cars have 2 pedals while Manuals have 3 (clutch).

Actually manual is better in my opinion. They usually get better gas mileage and have lower maintenance. Also with a manual a dead battery doesn't mean you are stuck. The only benefit of having a automatic is not changing the gears yourself, but they use way more oil (transmission fluid), have more internal parts to break and require a cooler which sits near the radiator (the piping can leak leaving you stranded).

The transmission is case with a set of internal gears that "transmits" the engine power to the driving wheels (front or rear). Manual or "standard" transmissions require a set of levers, cables and pedals to engage or disengage the clutch and pressure plate (that mechanically couple the transmission to the engine). In order to select which gear you want to use to accelerate (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) or decelerate, you must press a pedal and move a shifter simultaneously. An automatic transmission does all that utilizing fluids, valves and some electronics, once you select the "drive" command in your shifter. I have left out some finer details because those are of interest to mechanics or car "buffs" only.

You have to replace the clutch eventually on a manual transmission. The manual transmission is more work to drive and yet doesn't have any clear performance advantages in my opinion for every day driving. In general, I believe there's more people who wouldn't buy a used car because it had a manual transmission than people who would want it for that reason.

the manual transmisson has to be, well, manually shifted by the driver. There is a shift stick and a clutch pedal. You must do it yourself in order to go faster. An Automatic transmission shifts automatically. all you need to do is tell the vehicle if you want to go forward, backward or park, and it does the rest by itself. each are good transmissions, for differnt reasons and it depends on your uses for the vehicle and if you can drive a manual...not every one can (I can, but a lot of people I know cant)

manual you have to use two legs but in automatic you only use one
from the inside of the transmission they are all the same but the manual needs u to put in clutch so it can separate the movment of the engine from the transmission to switch in a new gear
automatic is diffrent it depends on the oil pressure in the transmission

Manual transmission requires the driver to shift all the gears manually by pusing in the clutch and shifting. An automatic, er, automatically shifts while in the drive gears, but you have to shift it into Park, Reverse, etc.

automatic shifts on its own, manuals you have a shifter and a clutch and have to shift on your own based on the rpms among other things
