How can I register a car that is not in my name?

I currently live in CT. I am moving to FL in 2-3 weeks. My CT registration is up June 18. So, it would make no sense for me to register my car in CT if I will be gone before the registration is up.

However, the car is in my fathers name. I am not on the car loan at all. My father lives in MA.

How can I get my car registered in FL without him there?

Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thank you very much!

You can't register a vehicle unless the title is in your name. Hands down. No exceptions. The only way would be for your dad to sign the title over to you, and he can't if there is a lien on the vehicle. FL won't even title the car for you if there's a lien that hasn't been released. Just have your dad renew the registration again in CT for you. There's no problem in driving a car in Fl that is registered in CT.

First point, your Dad can only use his earned no claim bonus on one car so if you resistered the Clio in his name he and got him to insure it he would get no ncb on the policy. Now it does not matter in whose name the car is registered, if the person applying for the policy and stating he will be the main driver is NOT the main driver and his young son or daughter is actually the main driver then the pair of you are fronting which is illegal. You will be obtaining a service by fraudulent means. If you were to have an accident at say between 0730am to 0900am, or about 4.30pm to 6.30pm the insurers will immediately suspect that you were driving to or from work and are actually the main driver. They don't have to PROVE you are, if they have a reasonable suspician you are then they will void the policy leaving you uninsured. Which will be just the start of your troubles, and your fathers.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net/ that has been around since 1995.

If the car is in your fathers name, and there is a loan against it, the loan company may not allow you to take the car out of state, check with them first. Also it's doubtful you can go to another state and register a car that isn't yours.

In fact, per http://www.flhsmv.gov/dhsmv/newflres.html it appears you can not do that.

"Take your proof of Florida insurance; your original out of state title and verification of the motor vehicle's *vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on form HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042 (available on our website), to your local Florida county tax collector's office."

unfortunately, if the vehicle has a lien against it, it must remain registered in the name of the person that is on the loan. if the loan were to be paid in full, then your father could do an act of donation to you and the title could then be transferred to you
