Should it be required that all Americans speak english?
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/may/19/...
An incident happened in my state that makes me say yes they should. A man may have been shot because his "english was so bad neighbors could barely understand him" It is probably practical to expect all Americans to speak english. The cops made other mistakes, but it should not be their responsibility to shout commands in 30 different languages to ensure a criminal may understand the command. What do you think?

English should be made the mandatory language here in the US. This should have been done a long long time ago. The people that came here (1700's) were British. The British descendants (Americans) won The Revolutionary War. Crispus Atiitcus was the first person to be killed for this country in that war (African American). The British stole the land from the Native Americans, so everyone has to get the heck over it. Whites, African Americans, Jews, Mexicans, Asians, and the immigrants who learn English make this country the best country in the world. Those are the only people entitled to the United States of America. All these people coming in are "brand new" foreigners who are too lazy to English and too crazy understand why it's important to learn the language of the land; need to stay where they come from. Hispanics are too damn ethnocentric, forcing their language and culture on everyone. They were colonized by Spain. Most of them are Native South American Indians who are mixed with Black (they also had slaves in South America) so they need to get, real they're not even Spanish! I've been to Spain and these crazy people ARE NOT THEM. Making English a requirement for citizenship will weed out the uneducated and ignorant people coming to this country. My family came to this country knowing English and the extended family that didn't know English learned real fast. No haba espanol, this is America wake up and smell the flowers. Look at the Irish, Italians, Russians, Greeks, Africans, Arabs, Jews, Asians they learn English and their kids learn English so they can actually succeed in this country (higher learning). And you can't get a job in certain parts of Florida because you're not "bilingual". I am biligual, but not in Spanish (actually they speak Hispanic, I've heard the Spanish in Spain and that's the proper Spainsh. Over half of the Hispanics can't even read Spanish). These people are on crack. Deport them NOW because they are trying to colonize America slowly and make this great nation a "Hispanic America". Reserve your foreign laguage for the home and not in public. They should just make a law that says learn English or be deported, final answer!

Government cops are cheap. Cops and hillbillies tend to have SJ personality personality types. NTs like myself are a lot smarter.
English is always changing.
It takes time to learn any language. duh dee duhduhDAA
Americans, like everyone else, need to have a lot of contact with the outside world in order to survive.
The modern economy is developing greater specialization of labor and the old borders are becoming irrelevant and impractical. People go where they are needed but sometimes get frustrated and killed by local arrogance as they try to communicate and learn. I have been to other countries, the people are more civilized.
It would not be hard to develop a basic social code like the non aggression principle "No one may threaten or commit violence against another man's person or property. Violence may be employed only against the man who commits such violence; that is, only defensively against the aggressive violence of another. In short, no violence may be employed against a nonaggressor. Here is the fundamental rule from which can be deduced the entire corpus of libertarian theory." Basicly, do not do to other people what you don't want them to do to you. Immigrants can understand that. Americans don't have a rights based social code. Instead its an American first code that gives lip service to rights.
It wouldn't be hard to develop translating handhelds....
I can think of several other reasons for the education system to teach multiple languages. Even if you aren't going to use the language you will think faster.
If our immigration policy wasn't so primitive we would have the people we needed for communication.
People should have the right to fire and refuse service to anyone for any reason. It would help some people know where they are and are not wanted. If someone wants to make an exclusive town of white merica rednecks then go ahead.
A gated community where immigrants can study the dominate culture at their own pace? Make it so!
My answer is LOCALISATION of policy. Once you are outside your village you are in international waters. Some basic code based on English might be present, maybe.

No. This is becoming a global economy and global world. If only English is required the US will be dramatically reducing its opportunities for the future. The children in the US today are already behind other countries and this is one of the main barriers, adults thinking that US is still superior in all that we do and say, and it is not true. Other languages should be required or the US will continue to fall further and further behind. I want my kids to be mulitlingual to have opportunities going forward. In case no one has been paying attention, american within a few generations is going to be a minority in the world. Language is key to success. Just think of how many more job opportunites these cops would have if they could speak 2 or 3 different languages...

Yes, people who come to live here permanently as Americans should speak the english language. Not asking them to give up or forget their native tongue, but asking them to learn english so they can communicate with the rest of us.

No, I don't think it should be a requirement, but I also don't think that we should make it easier for people who don't learn English. We shouldn't have signs up in post offices, and government buildings in other languages. I heard about a group of firemen in Oregon during the wildfires. There were volunteers who came to help, but could only speak Spanish, and could not communicate with the people in charge. So the people in charge were fired because they were not bilingual, that is unbelievable to me.

English is the official language of the United States of America.
Learn it, speak it ! Unless you are just passing through.

So than we will have to make sure all Puerto Ricans speak English. When comes to going into a society that speaks a language then you should learn it. Also that would interfear with the first amendment

Yes. Language bonds a country. There are examples today of countries, if you will research, that show the minority-language regions want to separate from the main country.

It is the law that all immigrants need to be able to speak and read English so why shouldn't everyone have to speak English.

This is a perfect example of why immigrants need to learn English. It is NOT the police departments responsibility to be bilingual- it is their responsibility to keep a community safe obviously they did that by the only means they had available to them.
