Best dog breed to introduce into a cat household?

We have a 7 year old male cat and we're moving to a bigger house (rental). I want to get a (very) small breed puppy a couple of months after we move, but I've got no idea what I'm possibly about to step in!

The cat is my mom's, he's territorial, somewhat lazy, very demanding of our affections (which we give freely anyway), he's the king of the house. What small breed would work best and how should the introduction be handled? Is it better to get the dog soon after we move or wait and let the cat adjust?

If it helps to know, my room is the entire third floor of the house, and my intention is for that to be the dog's primary place. I was going to get a dog carrier for him to be in while potty training him and getting him used to the environment. I would feed him up there, too. I don't pick up the cat since I'm allergic, though I do feed him and talk to him.

Update:

Okay, I can't get a big dog, because my sister is deathly afraid of them (she was attacked by one when she was very young).

I have had a dog before (good point, though), so I know a lot about dealing with dogs, just not bringing a dog into a cat's household (and yes, it IS the cat's house!)

I'm not sure if there is a best breed for this, but younger is better. I found a three-year-old chow chow at a park and he ended up being our dog and just loved the cats. He let a kitten sleep between his ears and wouldn't move, even though he had to pee, until the cat woke up! But most chows hate cats, so I wouldn't advise looking for one. It just depends on the dog. Maybe if you can find a puppy that has been raised in a household that has a lot of cats? Good luck!

I would suggest getting the dog right away when you move because then the cat can adjust to everything all at once. It may not be easy right away but they'll work out their own system. As long as you watch how they treat each other for the first little while I'm sure they'll become great friends. I have a black lab X german pointer and both cats love him and cuddle all the time. Good luck!

I did the same thing as you but with 2 cats. One of my cats rules the house and the other just goes along and wanted a dog. I did learn very quickly that smaller dogs tend to be very territorial also which does not make a good combination with the cat. For some reason larger dogs are more respectful of cats. I got a large dog (Golden Retriever) and although her heiness does not get along with him she tolerates him (walks around him etc...) and the dog does the same and the other cat even sleeps with the dog. Cute and strange. Just be careful with a small dog if you care about your cat.

It's hard with a puppy because you never know what the outcome is. You don't know what personality he or she will develop and so on. I have a 9 year old cat and 2 years ago we adopted a 2 year old dog that did well with cats which ended up being great. They get along well with each other, most of the time they ignore each other and do their own thing and other times they play together or sleep next to each other. He is a JRT/Chi Mix and is 8lbs (half of my cat).

I don't think it is the breed as much as it is the age of the dog. If you get a puppy and teach it how to treat the cat, everything should be alright. I have four dogs and four cats and they get along well for the most part. My toy poodle and lab do best with the cats.

Boston Terrier, and I'd get the pup real soon to you moving into your new place. That way the cat will have to deal with all the new stuff at once and maybe he won't be so territorial then. Good Luck! Boston Terriers are a very loving and affectionate breed. I have 2 and absolutely adore them.

I'd suggest an older dog, at least 5 years old, or a very small puppy. Perhaps a somewhat larger breed, as the little ones can be quite territorial and yappy, which will scare your cats.

it relatively is tough to assert if the dogs will injury the cat or no longer, so which you're able to provide the cat a place to flow the place the dogs can not get at him on the instant. notwithstanding in case you block off a mattress room with a toddler gate, so the cat has a secure place to cover. they'd desire to get used to a minimum of one yet another in time.

I used to own a Great Pyraneez and I had five cats. They got along well. Plus german shepherds and rot weilers get along well also :) it also depends on your cats behavior. So remember to make adjustments according to your cat :)

The real question is, have you ever owned a dog before? Because it really doesn't matter the breed of the dog. What matters is, are you ready to be the leader of this dog's life?
