Have you ever watched a young cop? How fast does he get old?
My buddy from school used to stop me on the street, give me hugs, for a year. Now he's serious, dismissive, and about 10 years older.
I had to remind him, why I looked familiar. He used to be fun and happy. Now, he's serious as a heart attack.

Nobody likes people who have position's of authority. Not that he's ever done anything bad but people hate what he stands for. Everybody gives him crap where he doesn't deserve it. So he only does all-out notions anymore. It just takes some time to get adjusted. It happens to everybody in his position. Military, Police, you name it. Give it a bit. He'll eventually learn to tone it down. Just takes experience. Nothing you can really do, just something he has to figure out himself.
Sit him down and ask him about some stories. I bet he has alot of them.

Being in a position to abuse ridiculous amounts of undeserved power over others will do that to a person.
