Bin Laden was trained CIA when the US and the Soviet Union were going at it back in the 70/80's things changed on one of the sides prospectives and you get what we got now.
As for the weapons in Afghantistan there basically using our own weapons that we gave them 20-30 years ago against us, and no one expects for the enemy to use our own crap against us.
