I love animals and right now we have a female cat almost a year old. All she's ever known is the two of us.

Once in awhile, she'll sort of play with us or even while she's on my lap, will turn and suddenly try to claw your hand or arm or even try to take a bite from your hand or finger. Nothing bad or anything but with sharp claws and teeth, it can be a little painful at times. Once she actually drew blood. I don't think she does this in a mean way and that's my question. Is this the way cats show affection?

It's possibly that she's playing. All cats are different. I have one cat that doesn't bite or scratch. She will if she's had too much attention but it's pretty rare. My other cat has a low tolerance for being petted. She would rather just lay beside you. She bites. If she bites or scratches then it's probably best to just let her be. See if she gives any warnings before she bites or scratches. My cats do. If you see a pattern then you can avoid being bit or scratched.

Cats do do love bites but from what you are describing I believe you may be overstimulating your cat. You need to watch your cat's tail. If it is slowly swaying from side to side then that may be the time to stop or slow down with playing or

    petting

she's just playing with you. she shouldn't be drawing blood though, my cat use to bite but i bought a book to deal with aggression to stop it... one thing they suggested was to get another cat so they could play together, i did that it was worth it.. now whenever my cats plays with me its usually only for affection. And if that isn't possible, hold a toy while your playing with your cat so it could bite that instead of your fingers... that works well to.

My cat used to jump and my head if a laid on the floor. She would play by creeping up on me and pounce, biting and digging her claws into my scalp. She would stop if I called out her name.

well you could consider it that way. my cats bite and claw when they play, or when their in heat. they aren't really trying to hurt me when they do......but claws and teeth are sharp.

think of it like this..... when you wrestle with someone, you don't mean to hurt them but sometimes you do. when you make love and bite or claw your partner......well.i don't think that really need much explaining....

She may be trying to tell you that the petting is to much, th feeling is to intense. Our male does that if you scratch certain spots to long because he wants you to stop.

Either shes playing with you or something hurts

but either way buy something to trim her nails so that doesn't hurt, if she is playing. :)

    Good luck.

sounds like play, that is how cats play.

That's how she plays with her littermates - why not get another cat for her to play with?
