Can you change a cat's name?

I'm going to get a cat soon when I move house, I know someone who has a cat she inherited from her sister, and she doesn't really want to keep it, so I've said I'll have it. It's only 8 months old, but has a name that I REALLY don't like. If I start calling her something else, will she learn a new name? Or will it just be too confusing for her?

Cats are extremely adaptable she'll learn her new name quickly. I used to work at a pet store and volunteer at a place for foster care for animals and what they tell people to do after they adopt the cat and want to change it's name is to call out it's new name three or four times right before you shake it's food box and feed it. it's a classical conditioning thing, like pavlov's dog. as long as food is involved she'll be perfectly happy with her new name.

I had a dog once who I couldn't keep so I had her adopted. the older lady who adopted her changed her name. She told me dogs (and I assume cats) associate their name with their surroundings and owners. Since I could no longer care for this dog, the woman changed her name to help the dog adapt to having a new home and owner. I just think the cat or dog will be used to hearing whatever name you pick, I could probably go back and call my old dog her old name and her ears would still perk up. Its a sound and tone they're used to hearing. If you change her name, be very repetitive with saying it so she becomes used to it. In my experience, cats never seem to be very attentive when it comes to name calling anyway. But I think its just fine to change it.

at only 8 months, the cat should learn a new name easily. You might try to keep some of the same features (be that sounds or amount of syllables).

i dont think cats really care about things like that as long as they have a great home with people who care about them. My parents adoped a dog and he had a different name before... the adoption agency changed his name because his old name sounded too 'rough'. Hes okay though, as long as you dont use his old name, he'll get confused and ptsd-ish. In my opinion, dogs respond to their names much more than cats... though i think cats recognise their name... they just dont give a damn if youre calling it.

It will confuse her in the beginning, but if you keep calling her name and then doing something with her (like calling her name to come for a treat or something) eventually, she will associate that name with herself. Dogs and cats don't necessarily know that their name is their name... they just know that word is associated with them, and it means that they should pay attention to you. Just be consistent and you should see results in like a month. Good luck.

You can teach her to respond to a new name, certainly. Choose a name with a strong vowel sound so that she will pick up on it easily. Say her name a lot, especially when you come into the house and when you call her to feed her, etc. She's young. She'll catch on in no time! Enjoy her!

Mine was a stray aged about three years old when she came to live with me. I didn't know her name before, so had to give her one. She answers to it now, so I don't think you will have any problems in re-naming your cat as long as you use the name often enough.
