First of all Congratulations on doing your research. So now we know not to get a puppy from a pet store, however as you are looking in the L.A area I just wanted to warn you of puppy mills in Mexico. A lot of these puppies end up in San Diego and L.A area. Mostly they advertise in news papers and online. They will be cheaper than the going rate for a Maltese from a good breeder which can be upwards of $1000-$1200 in Southern California.

These people will go across the border and smuggle 6 week old or younger puppies across. They will give you a story about how they are a friend's puppies and they are just selling for him and meet you at a parking lot or even in their homes. These puppies are from puppy mills too. Unless you can meet the parents on site and see the surroundings, there is no guarentee. Also they will say puppies have shots but usually they will give you fake papers. So please be very careful when looking for a puppy as these puppies can come with a lot of diseases.

Just a heads up! Good Luck with your search!

Atleast you are doing your research before getting one, most people realise it afterwards!

Not all pet stores deal with puppy mills. It does happen, and it happens all around this country. That's the hard part tho. You can't actually tell if a pet store does buy their pups from puppy mills. The pup will look cute in the cage but can have under lying health problems that aren't detected until you get a physical exam done.

I have been in a couple of puppy mills and was so appalled by what I saw. Puppy mills have horrible living conditions for their dogs. They interbreed too which causes deformities and under lying illnesses in their puppies.

My recommendation to you is to go to your local humane society or shelter and look around. Some times you won't find what you are looking for. Some times you will. You have to keep going back as often as you can as shelters get new dogs in every day.

Or, you could find reputable breeders in your area too. Look in your local newspapers. Check with your humane society, ACO even veterinarians can recommend reputable breeders to you.

    Good luck1

    LOL.

There are NO good petstores that sells dogs.

Every petstore gets their dogs from Puppy Mills or BYBs.

    Did you not know?

Look, here. Watch the video 'Bright Lights, Big Lies'.

    http://stoppuppymills.org/

Do NOT buy anything named 'Teacup' or 'Micro', becaue these are just expensive inbred runts, and they only live about 3 years.

Also do NOT buy anything like a Malti-poo, they are just unhealthy expensive Mutts, bred irresponsibly.

    ADD:

Well, okay, I'm glad you actually didn't know to begin with. But now you do!

If you get a dog, find a responsible breeder, or adopt from the shelter.

Just don't fund puppy mills or backyard breeders.

Here, you can tell who is a BYB, and who is a Reputable breeder.

    Good luck in your search!

There is no such thing as a good pet store when it comes to buying a puppy, they only sell puppies from puppy mills. You need to find a breeder go to the AKC web site and search for breed clubs in your area they can help you.

Also any site that sells pups on the Internet are also BYB and puppy mills. You need to see the parents and the premises before buying the pup.

sorry for yelling but I was hoping to get it through somebodies head about buying puppies from pet stores.

Don't go to a petstore if you don't want a puppy from a puppymill, if you want a puppy that will cost you thousands of dollars in vet bills, and will only live for 4 weeks, GO TO A PET SHOP! Rescue a healthy, socialized dog/puppy, go to a shelter or humane society. DONT GO TO A PET SHOP, get educated

You can;t find a good pet store for a puppy as there are no good pet stores that sell puppies. They all come from puppy mills.

Check out the AKC webside. They will have responsible breeders of Maltese in your area.

Good pet store is an oxymoron. Most pet stores are supplied by puppy mills. You don't want to get a dog from there.

Go to your local rescue or humane society. Or...try petfinder.com.

Do NOT buy from a pet store! Ever see a videos or images of a Puppy Mill? THAT is where your puppy came from, and buying that puppy is SUPPORTING the Mills!

Find a rescue, or a reliable and responsible breeder. Please educate yourself!
