If you needed knee replacements (both knees), would you consider having both done at the same time?
I have no cartalege in either knee and have had multiple medical problems over the past five years; however, my primary physician and cardiologist believe I can withstand the surgery. My physical strength, of course, is not up to par. Am to see my orthopedic doctor this morning to discuss the matter with him.
After my visit with the doctor yesterday, I have decided to have one knee done at a time. I had so many good answers, it is hard to select a "Best Answer"; thanks to ALL OF YOU!!

If you're worried about your strength, then just have one done. Don't overdo it. There's no sense gambling with your life in order to save a little time.

I would not suggest getting both knees done at the same time. The recovery from knee replacement is very long and difficult. I had a knee replacement four years ago and to this day my knee still hurts every day. I was injured in a car accident, so my injury may be a little different than yours, but the pain from the knee replacement was awful with just one knee, I can't imagine having both done at the same time.

I would only have one done at a time. Your strength is already not up to par so getting around after surgery on both knees would be very difficult.

One at a time. You can't put any weight on your knee after the surgery for a while. If you get them both done - how will you go to the bathroom??? Just a thought,....
My dad is about to have the same thing done for the same reason and I mentioned doing them both at the same time since he doens't go anywhere or do anything - and the bathroom thing came up.

You should do one at a time other wise you will be bed ridden and have to depend on family for all your needs and then have a hard time trying to do the treatments required after surgery but if want to be done with all the pain involved do both and do as doctor recommends.

No, I would not. I would work with one knee at a time. It would be very hard to have both done and do all the therapy needed after the surgery.

When I was in highschool, I need all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. My parents had a bad arguement over whether to do two, or four at a time.
I finally said that it was my choice, and if it hurt that bad, I would never get the other two done. They let me make the decision. Had all four done.
My daughter had foot surgery 1.5 years ago. She also decided that if it hurt too bad, she would never do the other. She had them both done at the same time.
Buy lots of magazines and have help getting around before you go in for the surgery. Make premade meals that are easy to reheat, too.
Good Luck to ya!

I think it depends on your needs at the time, for example if you did both at once amd have someone who can help you and care for you when you cant do things yourself then you would probably be happy that you can move along after the healing process and not be anticipating another length of time with less mobility.
But if you need to be able to work or care for children or cant stand to be very couped up or Dependant than you would probably get one at a time, it may take longer in the long run but you will still have a higher level of mobility and be able to carry one with your business.
so it really depends on your circumstances at the time.
maybe make a list of pros and cons for each and your situation and see what will suit your lifestyle better.
good luck
I hope I was helpful

I definitely would not, especially if your physical strength lacks. My boyfriend's dad recently had knee surgery, and it's been pretty difficult for him to recover, and his strength and energy before the surgery were above normal for a man his age. I would recommend getting one at a time. You'll be in pain longer, but it won't be as severe. Good luck!

A friend of mine had both of hers done at the same time, and said she was really glad she did that. She was up and around in no time! Good luck at the orthopedic doc this morning! Hope you get some good news!

NO! you wont be walking for a while. if yo uhave both knees done at the same time. even if you do have them done it will be extremely painful for the first week and you youll barely stand on crutches.
if you have both done you wont be able to walk at all. the only upside i see to this is if you have someone to take care of you and you want to go through all the pain fast. me, i would get sick of seeing the same walls and having to rely on other people that much.
