Best place to camp in the US without premade campsites?

I want to go somewhere secluded but everywhere I look for has premade campsites with tons of people there. And they dont permit camping anywhere but the designated areas. Does anyone know a place where you can just go off the beaten path a bit

Boundary Waters, is on the border of Minnesotta and is a wilderness area where you can go and literally get lost in the fantastic lake beauty. The campsites are set very far apart from eachother, and the only noticable thing that actually makes them campsites, is a latrine style toilet down a trail from the campsite. The campsites are ONLY accessible by canoe, or if your looking to walk for a couple of days, then walking. But definitely check out Boundary Waters, its gorgeous, prestine untouched land, variable wildlife, and boundless beauty everywhere you look. Good luck!

My family and I love camping and have been many places. I have not found one that is not premade campsites. Our nicest place was wolf run. You are not right on top of the other person, we were set up by a path and it lead down to the lake with beautiful landscaping along the path. It was nice. Good Luck!

The great wide open isn't actually all that open, is it? I remember the first time I drove out west, I had all these romantic notions about camping out under the stars like the old pioneers traveling in covered wagons. Unfortunately, every piece of land is fenced off and it's damn near impossible to find a suitable spot for unsanctioned camping. Your best bet is a national park like Badlands or Yellowstone. You can plop down pretty much wherever you want there.

I wish I could answer that, but I am keeping an eye on this question because I have a 27 year old son who prefers this style of camping and I am sure he would love to know some more spots, he currently camps along creeks and rivers on his friends property.

National Forest. Here is a paragraph from the back of my map.

"However, if roughing it is more your style, you may choose primitive camping which allows you to camp anywhere on the forest not posted "No Camping." There is no charge for this type of camping, no permit is required and you can enjoy primitive camping year-round."

I would say the best place in the U.S. to camp is in Western Montana. There are lush forests, alpine lakes, tons of fish. Overall its very mountainous and beautiful with not many people

Try out Nevada! 75% of the entire state is public land...very few developed campgrounds...huge tracts of BLM managed land.

Really! I get out to the wilderness every two weeks for several days and post about it on my outdoor blog.
